Super Mario Wonder: How To Complete ‘Leaping Smackerel’

November 13, 2023 by Adam Carr

Complete walkthrough for every collectable to be found in ‘Leaping Smackerel’ for Super Mario Wonder’s Petal Isle.

Table of Contents[Hide][Show]
  • Purple Coin #1
  • Purple Coin #2
  • Purple Coin #3
  • Wonder Seed #1
  • Flag & Wonder Seed #2

Once you finish your first World in Super Mario Wonder the game will start to introduce all kinds of new mechanics. The first you will get to mess around with is the concept of swimming. ‘Leaping Smackerel’ will test your swimming aptitude whilst also making it more difficult to find secrets.

Thankfully, we are here to help. In this guide, we will walk you through how to find every last collectible in ‘Leaping Smackerel’, including every Wonder Seed, and Purple Coin, and how to reach the top of the flagpole. This level doesn’t have a Secret Exist, so all you have to do is get to the end to move on.

Note: The Dolphin Kick Badge works wonders in this level.

Purple Coin #1

Once you have left the first screen and entered the underwater section of this level you will encounter your first Smackerel. These are giant fish that hide beneath the sand. Swim past it and you will come across your first Purple Coin under some unbreakable blocks. There’s also another Smackerel, and they will be needed to unlock the coin.

Smackerels can break blocks, so bait them into attacking. Once it retreats to the sand, quickly go through the gap and grab the Purple Coin before escaping the way you came.

Purple Coin #2

Shortly after your first Purple Coin, you will reach a cluster of pipes that have some Spikey Pickles poking out. Above them is a pipe leading directly up. Below them is a Smackerel waiting to pound. Bait the Smackerel into jumping up towards the Spikey Pickles. This will kill them, giving you safe passage to the pipe and the secret area it holds within.

Grab the Purple Coin and then move on.

Purple Coin #3

After you have reached the Checkpoint Flag you will see a suspicious gap in the ceiling. Headbutt that gap to reveal a hidden block. This will spawn a purple vine leading down. Climb onto the vine and go off-screen. Your third and final coin awaits.

Wonder Seed #1

Your first Wonder Seed can be found in a large ‘?’ block near the second Checkpoint Flag. You will need to quickly grab it otherwise it will float off-screen forcing a level reset if you want to try to grab it again.

Touching the Wonder Seed causes a giant Smackerel to terrorise the level. Not only that, but 5 Wonder Seed Tokens will spawn. These are mostly blocked by terrain, so bait the Giant Smackerel into jumping up and making a path to the Tokens. Once you have all 5, the section will end and you will get your Wonder Seed.

Flag & Wonder Seed #2

The second Wonder Seed, as always, is collected upon successful completion of the level. Whilst you are at it, you should always try to reach the top of the flagpole as this is a tracked stat for 100% completion. You will need to be quick on this one as the platform required to reach the top has a Smackerel ready to destroy it. Hop onto the platform then do a dash jump to reach the top of the pole. No hesitation or you will miss your chance.
