Monster Dance Party [Evil Within]
One of the weirdest secrets in any game is hidden away in a DLC expansion for The Evil Within. In The Consequence, you play as Kidman fighting through the wrecked mental city of Krimson. Someone in a ruined office, there’s a vending machine you can interact with 15 times. Doing so drops a painting nearby, allowing Kidman to peer through a revealed peephole.
On the other side, there’s something nobody could expect. There’s a disco dance party, the bizarre Shade monster — a spotlight-headed creature with abnormally long female legs — is cutting a rug for some of the haunted monsters holding glow sticks. I can’t say anything that the video above doesn’t already say.
Easy Mode [SOMA]
This addition isn’t silly at all — for some players, it’s the only way to get through SOMA without having a heart attack. As one of the scariest games on our list, it also has the un-scariest feature. Easy Mode is an addition included in future updates of the game, allowing players to experience the philysophical story without losing their minds in abject fear.
The mode makes it so all the monsters don’t attack you, turning a tense game of cat-and-mouse into a walking simulator. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it’s still an incredibly atmospheric game that’s packed with dread and disgusting imagery. There’s something kind of fitting about the twisted remains of humanity, forced into an uncaring, deathless life support, merely skulking around the station instead of chasing you.
