Cooking By The Book [Hate Plus]
One of the weirdest achievements ever is found in an oddball visual novel on Steam — Hate Plus puts you on a Generation Ship, trying to solve a complex mystery. You’ll also spend a lot of time chatting it up, and I don’t know why I’m explaining this, because you don’t even need to play the game to earn this particular achievement.
To unlock “Cooking By The Book’, you just need to take a picture of a handmade cake and send it straight to the developers. Yes, seriously! The lead creator Christina Love had put people on the honor system eventually — you can’t keep checking cakes and unlocking achievements manually forever! Now players can put in the code [12101989 + 0] on the main menu to unlock.
I Did It For The Trophy [Yakuza 0]
Skeevy achievements / trophies are over-represented in Japanese games, and the best title for all of these is ‘I Did It For The Trophy’ in Yakuza 0. To earn this trophy, you have to watch all the bikini model VHS tapes in the game. They’re all ridiculous, they’re all using real models, and they’ll make you cringe with second-hand embarrassment for everyone involved.
This is hardly the worst gross achievement — in Nier: Automata and Lollipop Chainsaw, you’ll get an achievement for looking under the main character’s skirt. Hilarious, the developers tried to prevent that in Lollipop Chainsaw, so earning this achievement wasn’t as easy as it sounds. The lengths we go for a simple achievement — we’ve got to debase our moral standards.
