Detective Pikachu isn’t just in theaters this weekend, he’s also making a limited appearance in Pokémon GO. You can find (and catch!) the diminutive yellow-furred detective in-game if you’re lucky. Detective Pikachu and more Pokémon that appear in the film are appearing more frequently for a short time — you’ll have until May 17th.
The Pokémon GO Detective Pikachu event features select avatar items in the store, like a hat with Pikachu ears, and a shirt showing off the great detective himself. You’ll also get double XP for catching Pokémon during the event, along with new themed Field Research quests and limited time raids. Get out there and start investigating, because the real prize of this event is capturing a Detective Pikachu of your own. Keep scrolling down to learn how he’ll appear.
This isn’t the only secret you’ll find in Pokémon GO — learn about photo-bombing Smeagles, Sinnoh Stones, and other awesome additions. For a full list of hidden stuff check out the updated Pokémon GO Easter egg guide.

How To Get Detective Pikachu | Event Guide
There’s more than just Detective Pikachu during this event, which is active May 7th-May17th, but the best possible addition is Detective Pikachu himself. You can capture a special Pikachu in a detective’s cap during this event, and there’s only one way to get him to appear.
- Take photos and there is a small chance Detective Pikachu will photobomb your pics.
You’ll need to take pictures in AR+ Mode. After taking a few pictures, a Pikachu in a Detective hat will pop onto your screen — wait a moment after that, and Detective Pikachu will appear in the overworld map. Then you’ll be able to approach and capture this wily Pokémon.
The special event increases the amount of Pikachus, Snubbulls, and Psyducks that spawn in the wild. There are even more Pokémon that spawn at a higher rate; Eevee, Loudred, Aipom, Jigglypuff, Growlithe, Cubone, Lickitung, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Ludicolo, Flareon, and Charizard all have a greater appearance rate in the wild. In Europe, you’ll also find an increased number of Mr. Mimes.
Along with those increases capture rates, you’ll also find two new Shiny pokemon. Shiny Aipom and Shiny Ambipom are prowling the wilds — if you spot a pink version of the normally purple monkey Pokemon, you’ll want to catch them!
Finally, there’s a Field Research mission that challenges you to catch 10 Aipom, Snubbull, or Jigglypuff. Catching 10 gives you a Ditto encounter reward — if you don’t have Ditto yet, now’s the time to get one.
