General Thorm is the big bad of Baldur’s Gate 3’s second Act. Up until this point, he has been impervious to all damage – immortal for all intents and purposes. It’s time to put him down once and for all but be prepared for one heck of a fight. Thorm is not alone, and his god is always watching.
Your final encounter with Thorm is up there as one of the hardest battles in all of Baldur’s Gate 3. It has some twists and turns to keep you on your toes, and if you don’t steel your nerves and get stuck in, you will find yourself overwhelmed before you know it. In this guide, we are going to walk you through how to defeat General Thorm and his insidious master.

How To Defeat General Thorm In Baldur’s Gate 3
We highly recommend you buff your party before you enter the boss room. Spells like Bless and Haste are incredibly powerful and will make this fight much easier. Aid is also very powerful, especially if you power it up. At this stage in the game, Aid will give your party +15HP which is a substantial boost.
When this fight starts, Thorm will once again be impervious to your attacks. This is because Nightsong is once again trapped in a Soul Cage – this time, at the back of the room. Your first task should be to get a character to the Soul Cage and use the ‘Help’ action to free her. Nightsong is a powerful ally who will be of great help in this fight, and of course, once she is free, Thorm will be vulnerable.
Whilst someone is dashing or teleporting to rescue Nightsong, you need to deal with the enemies around the room. Thorm is a powerful character, so clearing out his allies quickly will let you focus your attention entirely on him. This will also prevent Nightsong’s terrible AI from going off and being distracted.
There are three Necromites, four Intellect Devourers, and one Mind Flayer. The order in which you take them out is entirely up to you, but we found that dealing with the Necromites and Intellect Devourers made the fight easier. A quick Fireball will kill either cluster of enemies, and a Hasted Paladin, Monk, Assassin, or Fighter can easily dispatch the other.
Once the chaff is taken care of, you can finish off the Mind Flayer. They have around 70HP, which can be a pain to deal with, but some focus fire from your team should be able to down it in a single turn.
With all the additional threats gone and Nightsong free, you can start chipping away at Thorm.
Tips For Defeating Thorm
Thorm’s biggest gimmick is his reaction. Every time you hit Thorm in melee, he will counter and attempt to knock you prone. This can be devastating, so we highly recommend you use spells and attacks that turn off reactions. Failing that, if you manage to knock Thorm Prone, he will be unable to do anything. Spells like Blind are also very helpful, as is the Lucky Feat.
Your goal here is to take Thorm out as quickly as possible. Abilities that guarantee critical hits (like Executioner) are excellent in this fight. We found that a Paladin using Divine Smite was able to almost kill Thorm in a single turn – especially when buffed with Haste. Lay into him with everything you have to make sure he dies before he gets a chance to deal too much damage.
Finally, Thorm will use Incubate Death every turn which will spawn additional Necromites. The longer Thorm is alive, the more of a hassle this becomes.
Once Thorm dies, the real boss fight begins.
Persuading Thorm To Give Up In Baldur’s Gate 3
If you don’t want to fight Thorm, you can convince him to give up. This will result in him killing himself. This might seem like a good idea at first, but this triggers the second phase of this fight early, and you better believe the enemy that spawns gains invulnerability from Nightsong.
We highly recommend you don’t go down this path as trying to free Nightsong during the second phase is incredibly difficult. This fight is much easier if you fight Thorm, which is counterintuitive, we admit.
How To Kill Apostle Of Myrkul
The second phase has you fighting the avatar of Myrkul – the god of the dead. This boss fills the central chamber and is very dangerous. Coming in with over 200 HP and attacks that displace and damage everyone in the room, Myrkul is not to be trifled with. If Nightsong is still in her Soul Cage, this boss is also impervious to damage.
Not only that, but healing is all but impossible due to Myrkul pumping out his Bone Chill aura. This will even stop you from reviving fallen allies, which is devastating. To make matters worse, he will absorb Necromites and fire off an instant death spell called Finger Of Death.
To kill Myrkul you need to act fast and hold nothing back as Myrkul can wipe your entire party in two turns with ease. We once again found the Paladin to be the best class for the job as their single-target damage is incredible. Make sure you have Haste active and lay into Myrkul with Smite four times a turn.
Since you cleared out the chaff during phase one, Nightsong will focus all of her attacks on Myrkul, and she is no slouch in combat. She will hit for massive amounts of damage per turn, so she mustn’t be distracted.
Finally, using spells like Cloud Of Daggers is incredibly effective against Myrkul. Due to his incredible size and inability to move around the room, Cloud Of Daggers will hit multiple times whenever Mykrul activates. This is a great way to deal a lot of damage outside of your turn.
With Myrkul dead, you are free to move on to Act 3 and all the drama that comes with it.
Rewards For Defeating General Thorm And The Apostle Of Myrkul in Baldur’s Gate 3
Once you have finished off Thorm and his god, you are free to loot the room. The best items are found on Thorm, however. You can net yourself:
- Ketheric’s Warhammer
- Ketheric’s Shield
- Reaper’s Embrace
All of these are incredibly powerful and are well worth using on a Fighter or Paladin. We found these to be a substantial buff to both damage output and survivability.
