Borderlands is soon about to receive a brand new installment. This week, we’ll finally get our hands on Borderlands 4. Now here’s hoping that this installment turns out well. Of course, we don’t have long before we’ll be able to find that out. If you’re already planning to pick up a copy, then you can get a heads-up on the difficulty modes that will be presented to you when starting up a new game.
Fortunately, there are some options here if you’re after either a seamless and smooth gameplay experience or a tough challenge. Whatever the case might be for you, you’ll have the option to run with, regardless of whether you’re playing solo or with other players online. Here’s everything you’ll want to make note of.
Borderlands 4 Difficulty Options Revealed

Thanks to the folks over at Gamespot and the Borderlands 4 Bulletin X account, we have some new details to share. It looks like there will be three difficulty options players will be able to select from. When starting a new character, players can choose the level of difficulty they prefer to run with. These options range from Easy to Normal and Hard. However, we do have some extra bits of details from the three.
You can find the official descriptions for each of the difficulty options below. As noted by Gamespot, these are the official descriptions Gearbox Software has placed for the game, alerting players to the type of experience they’ll get.
- Easy: Looking for a story. Reduced damage, Elemental Affinities matter less.
- Normal: Looking for a balanced experience.
- Hard: Looking for a challenge. Increased damage taken, increased Cash, Loot Quality is increased, Elemental Affinities matter more.
What’s interesting to note here is that each difficulty option is catered towards the individual player. So, if you’re going with a group of friends online, they can all be on different difficulty modes. It looks like there’s no change based on the enemy’s HP, but instead on the damage you’ll take.
That said, we still have some time before we get our hands on the game, and marketing is still in full swing. In fact, Conan O’Brien’s marketing video to highlight the game was recently pulled online. This was due to major spoilers being shared on the video, so while marketing is still going on, Gearbox Software is keeping an eagle eye on players to ensure they are not being spoiled.
Meanwhile, if you haven’t picked up a copy, there’s a chance you can win one through a special Voodoo Ranger IPA collaboration. As for the rest of us, we’ll be waiting for Borderlands 4 to drop on September 12, 2025. When it does release, you’ll find it available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch 2 owners will have to wait a bit longer as it’s not set to arrive until October 3, 2025.
