Conan O’Brien Tries and Fails To Play Borderlands 4

September 9, 2025 by Todd Black

Don’t worry, it was for charity!

There was a time when video games weren’t seen as anything other than a “toy,” or even a “novelty.” It was something that was “primarily for kids,” even though adults enjoyed them just as much, and were the ones making them. The stigma carried over for a long time, until those who literally grew up on video games were now adults in the world, and helped shed some of the perception that was around them. What does any of this have to do with Borderlands 4? Well, Conan O’Brien is a comedian who isn’t afraid to put himself in a position to look foolish for a good cause, and he often does this with video games.

Conan is NOT a gamer. Thus, he has a YouTube series called “Clueless Gamer” where he’ll play certain titles with other people and attempt to understand all that’s going on, while also being the comedian that he is and making things entertaining with jokes and such. Typically, he does this event when raising money for charity. The charity that was being supported was Next For Autism, and the two people who donated the most money to that charity were there with Conan when he dove into Borderlands 4.

Needless to say, he’s not a “wicked man,” so he didn’t exactly “understand all that was happening within. For example, despite being a comedian, he didn’t like Claptrap that much and felt he was a bit annoying. Furthermore, he understood that the point of the game was to shoot everything in sight most of the time, but he didn’t “get” why there had to be a story for such a gameplay loop.

To be fair, many feel the story of the franchise is “hit or miss,” especially with the last mainline entry, so that’s a fair thing to state. Anyway, if you’re curious about how the whole “Clueless Gamer” session went, you can watch it below:

So, why are we sharing this with you? It’s honestly a pretty simple thing: it’s meaningful. Specifically, even though gaming makes Conan O’Brien uncomfortable, he knows that it’s something that many people connect with, and he’s willing to play them to help raise money for those in need. He’s using video games as an outlet to help others, and that’s an incredibly noble endeavor.

There are those out there who still insult video games and say that “nothing good comes from them.” If you hear someone say something like that, show them this video and tell them how this all was for charity.
