If we’re being blunt here. We all knew that when Hollow Knight Silksong launched, it was going to be huge, and that the only question was “how big was it going to be at launch?” The answer was apparent when September 4th finally came, and it not only defied expectations, but it also crashed numerous digital stores on which the game was bought. It was chaos on the internet because people wanted to play the game right at launch, but couldn’t, because the stores were overloaded with hundreds of thousands of other players trying the same thing. Thankfully, things calmed down, and over the last several days, gamers have been enjoying the indie title from Team Cherry.
Fast forward to now, and the first sales numbers for Hollow Knight Silksong have arrived via Alinea Analytics. According to them, the game got over 5 million players in its first three days. Now, to be clear, we literally mean “players,” not sales.” The team was specific in noting that over a million players were enjoying the game on Xbox Game Pass, which is a feat in and of itself.
Now, as for actual sales, the Alinea site noted that just on Steam, the title had over 3 million sales. That’s basically a million a day, even though it totally wasn’t. Another thing to note here is that the indie title also dropped on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and the PlayStation Store. On Nintendo’s side of things, the game was at the top of their eShop for days, so it’s definitely gotten sales there.
Between the hype that was there for the game at launch and the $20 price tag, it’s clear that gamers weren’t hesitating for a single moment to get the title. So, the sales are likely even more now, especially with the other console sales unaccounted for.
Now, how does this all connect to GTA 6? Simply put, many see this “very hyped launch” as a precursor to what will happen when Rockstar drops its super-anticipated title in May of next year. Both games had YEARS of no information and teasers, which just built up the fervor for them more. Both are from teams that “desire perfection in their titles,” and deliver it upon launch, and so on and so forth.
The only real difference is that when Rockstar’s title drops, it’ll likely be an even bigger explosion of sales, and it’ll definitely be most profitable overall due to a higher price point.
