The Witcher 4 Developer Talks About Surpassing The Witcher 3

July 29, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

The Witcher 4 narrative director, Philipp Weber, reveals what they are after.

Fans of The Witcher franchise, more specifically The Witcher 3, rejoiced when they found CD Projekt Red was working on another entry. We know that they are actively developing The Witcher 4, and it will put players into the role of Ciri. However, it’s clear that fans of the franchise are wondering if it’s even possible for the developers to catch lightning in a bottle twice.

The Witcher 3 remains a pinnacle installment for the series. Now the series as a whole has gained more attention thanks to the Netflix series. However, years after The Witcher 3’s release, fans are still loving the game either for the first time or when they embark on another playthrough with the ever iconic Geralt of Rivia.

Can The Witcher 4 Top The Witcher 3?

That’s going to be a subjective question to answer. However, even the developers are aware that the community has been wondering this very thing. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, the narrative director behind The Witcher 4, Philipp Weber, noted that the team is not looking at things mathematically.

It’s a subjective question. However, they do have plans in place for how they can do justice to the legacy of The Witcher 3. Those plans mainly focus on how the developers tell their stories.

I think the way we want to do justice to the legacy of The Witcher 3 is to take the philosophy we had during The Witcher 3 – how to make a game, how to really care about these things, how to tell stories – and keep that philosophy. At the same time, there are new questions we want to answer, because this is supposed to feel like a true sequel, not just redoing what we did before. And I think it’s really trying to have that healthy mix of really moving forward and also trying out some new things, but doing justice to what was there, not trying to beat it.

At least we know the developers are not changing up the formula too much with how they handled The Witcher 3. Of course, we’re still waiting on learning more about the premise of this new installment. Hopefully, we’re not waiting too much longer before the game gets another showcase.

That said, it looks like the developers are also drawing inspiration from their time during The Witcher 3. If you don’t recall, late last month, we reported on how developers were looking at recordings of Novigrad to get inspiration. Meanwhile, it was previously revealed that developers were using not only the lessons learned from The Witcher 3, but also Cyberpunk 2077 when developing this thrilling new installment.
