It’s clear that 2025 will be a “year of surprises,” but that doesn’t mean that all the surprises we’re getting are ones we’re expecting. There have been several gaming surprises so far, and one of them has to do with A Minecraft Movie, which is still dominating theaters right now. It stunned everyone a weekend past when it grossed over $160 million at the domestic box office, beating a record that Mario had set with his 2023 animated movie. The question, though, was how well the movie would do in its second weekend, which is now over. Everyone expected its earnings to drop, as that’s how theater runs work, but the question was, “How much will it drop?”
The answer, as revealed by Variety, is about 50%. A Minecraft Movie earned $80 million in its second weekend, ensuring that it was the No.1 film at the box office once more while also showing that it had serious staying power. That reveal is important because now all indications are that it’ll keep doing well in the weekends to come, especially with no serious competition on the way, and it might just be the first billion-dollar film of 2025 if it can maintain its pace.
The proof of that comes from the fact that the movie has only been out worldwide for about 10 days and it’s already grossed over $500 million. That already means it’s the top-grossing film of 2025, even beating out a certain Marvel film that came out in February.
Whether it reaches the billion mark is hard to say, but there is hope, and that’s what many in the movie industry want right now, given all the “uncertainty” with certain upcoming releases from big-name brands.
Regardless, though, the film is doing incredibly well, and it once again highlights that when video games play to their audience and have fun with the source material, big things can happen, and huge money can be made. There are already talks of a sequel, and that says it all right there. Now, yes, clearly, this movie “isn’t for everyone,” but that’s not a knock on the film. The game is the best-selling title in the world, and that means that there are plenty of young gamers who WANT to see a film like this, and their families will take them to it as a result.
Plus, now there is chatter about whether other “building entities” like Roblox could get the big-screen movie treatment. You never know…
