Nintendo just finished a big week. Last week, we had the official Direct presentation that focused on the Switch 2. During this presentation, we learned not only about the upcoming console hardware but also some of the games heading our way. Since then, a few members from Nintendo have chimed in with media questions, one of which touched on achievements.
Both Sony and Microsoft offer an achievement system for their consoles. Players can hunt down different achievements in the game that are tied to various challenges. These could be anything from simply progressing through the campaign to more strenuous objectives. Regardless, this feature is a great way to keep players engaged with a game and a means to showcase your accomplishments with other players online.
So, with as much popularity as they have become over the years, some fans might have hoped Nintendo would jump onboard. But nope. That’s not happening, and according to Polygon, it’s as much of a response as we’ve got so far. Bill Trinen, the vice president of product experience for Nintendo of America, told the publication directly that achievements were not coming to the Switch 2 system.
Instead, there are some small achievements players can rack up from the upcoming smartphone app tied to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. However, beyond that, it doesn’t look like we are going to ever see this feature implemented on the console itself.
While the Direct happened last week, details about the console are still coming out online. This includes Switch 2 edition games requiring downloads even with the physical cartridge release, the Nintendo Company sticking by its $80 price tag for Mario Kart World, and the Switch 2 not featuring Hall effect thumbsticks. We’re sure there are even more details inbound as we approach the official launch date of the console on June 5, 2025.
