The question of 3rd party games on the Nintendo Switch 2 is one that many people are wondering about. After all, so far, only the smallest of titles have been confirmed for the new platform. By that, we mean things like indie games or Kickstarter projects that aren’t afraid to admit that they’re for a ‘Nintendo Platform’ that isn’t the OG Switch. In contrast, many other developers, including Capcom, aren’t saying whether upcoming big titles from them are coming to the console. However, NetEase is a bit more transparent in its thoughts on a Marvel Rivals Switch 2 port.
IGN talked with NetEase during the DICE summit, and Producer Weicong Wu had this to say on the matter:
“We’re already in contact with Nintendo and working on some development kits. And whenever we find that we could provide great performance for our game on Switch 2, we’re open to that. The reason why we didn’t launch it onto the Switch, it was the first generation of that device they cannot provide a great experience for our gameplay. So if it could achieve that goal, we’re open to that.”
While this doesn’t confirm that Marvel Rivals is coming to Switch 2, the consideration is there, and it also points to the Switch 2 being more powerful than the OG Switch in many ways. For comparison, the game isn’t currently on the PS4 or Xbox One, and that might just mean that the Switch 2 could at least be “near their level” so that this game can run.
Ironically, it’s not the graphics that would be the big test for the title but the online functionality. While the Nintendo Switch has plenty of titles that run online, those that have a “bigger online presence,” such as those that have numerous people on screen at the same time, have had difficulties on Switch. Thus, if the Switch 2 wants to get this team shooter, it’ll need to be able to run smoothly with six-person teams doing all manner of incredible attacks and effects. We may not get the answer to this question at the April 2nd Nintendo Direct, but it is something to potentially look forward to.
Speaking of which, NetEase has been slowly upgrading the title since launch, and with new characters like the Fantastic Four for people to play, there’s almost always something new to do in the title. Plus, as a recent change noted, they are absolutely listening to fans, which is always encouraging.
