Regarding FromSoftware, it’s easy to look at them now and say, “Oh, they’re the team that made the Souls genre,” or “They made it cool to make really hard games that you struggle to beat.” Both of these are true in their own ways, and the company has absolutely benefitted from that. However, another element of the company that many might not look at is that they took each game that they made and then tried to improve it by making a new title. They never stayed stagnant. Two years ago, Elden Ring proved that in spades, and that’s why it’s one of the fan-favorite games of the current generation.
The title was a true “culmination” of everything they had built before within their genre of “git gud” titles. Elden Ring had a massive world, the ability to build your character in various ways, the ability to play with friends, the seamless ability to go anywhere you wanted and challenge who you wanted, and more. The title was the “Game of the Year” in 2022 and sold 13 million in just its first month! Fast forward to now, and it’s sold over 24 million copies. So, yeah, it was a success, and many fans can’t wait for the DLC that will help explore the world even more.
In an interview with Famitsu, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s director, was asked about whether he’d be up for making another game of this size. Famously, he was the one who said he “didn’t understand” why people loved this game so much and why it sold so many units. But when he was asked this question, he replied:
“Yes, I do. if I am allowed, I want to try.”
He further noted that he and the team at FromSoftware find making games of this scale incredible and even “thrilling.” Granted, they’re working on the DLC for the title, which has taken over two years to get a release date, but they are working on something!
The question now becomes, what would they make next in this style? Well, we don’t know. Another great thing about FromSoftware is that you don’t know exactly the style they want to “dive into” with each new title. You can look at some of the games they made after their “beloved trilogy” started to unfold or was finished for proof of that.
But if they make it anywhere near the quality and scale of Elden Ring, they can bet they’ll have another hit on their hands.
