Black Myth Wukong Gets New Trailer At Gamescome

August 22, 2023 by Todd Black

Become the Monkey King!

Game Science/YouTube

As we all know, mythology is one of the best media inspiration sources. The idea of gods ruling on high and how they’ve interacted with mortals has created many stories over the generations. We’ve seen tales of the Greek Gods, Norse Gods, and various other pantheons. But a title that might be intriguing to many of you is Black Myth Wukong. The tale will retell and reimagine the legendary story featuring the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. But as we’ve seen from previous trailers, it’ll have a very gritty and detailed visual style, arguably making it more intriguing.

You are the “Destined One,” and you’ll trailer the land to learn of the truth behind a legend that this realm holds. But what is a “Journey to the West” without conflict and struggle? As you’ll see in the official trailer from Gamescom below, you’ll have to wield your mighty staff to defeat all manner of foes. Many of them are taken directly from the mythological tale, while others will just be fun things to fight.

What’s key to note here is that you’ll have the full and more-or-less accurate abilities of Sun Wukong within the game. For example, you’ll notice how you can use your staff in various ways. You can use it to block attacks, create a shield of protection around you, or warp it to do devastating damage.

In the lore, the staff was something that only the Monkey King could wield, and he could transform it into anything he wanted, even a tiny toothpick that he would put behind his ear for safe storage. Ironically enough, that last part we see at the end of the trailer. Further showing the connection to the mythology.

Another thing that’s clear is that Black Myth Wukong fully embraces the Chinese themes and styles, complete with the music that is used in the trailer.

The game also promises to include characters of every kind for the “Destined One” to interact with. As you learn from them, you’ll weave together the tapestry of the world through their tales. Who are these people that you come across? What makes them so special? What can you learn from them? These are but some of the many questions you’ll ask as you play the title.

So if you’re looking for another mythological adventure to take part in, you won’t have to monkey around for long to get something new. Check out the official trailer below:
