Rumor: Starfield Is Getting An Interactive Launch Event

August 14, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

We can imagine a Grand Guignol of space dioramas.

A new rumor has appeared that Starfield will be getting a very special unveiling.

Karim Jovian, who describes himself on his profile as a digital media producer and interviewer, tweeted this out a few hours ago:

“Just got word from a confidential source that Microsoft will be holding a interactive launch event for #Starfield

Let’s just say, they were really excited when talking to me about it”

When asked why Microsoft did not opt for a physical launch, this is what Karim had to say:

“Reason why is because a lot of purchases are digital nowadays, let alone most players already have it on Gamepass. But who knows.”

We should be clear that Karim hasn’t tweeted anything to substantiate this rumor, such as a screenshot, or the word of a credible insider or journalist who has gotten leaks correct before. But it does sound like something Microsoft would try, based on what they have done recently.

And that thing they recently did was hold a gigantic Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct event two months ago. For readers who were not aware or don’t remember, Microsoft held this event in lieu of a physical presence at this year’s E3. This was to be a two hour event, where they featured and revealed games for an hour and a half, and had a final half hour dedicated just to Starfield.

But, I didn’t describe this as a digital only event, and that’s because it was not strictly digital only. Microsoft also worked with Fathom Events to screen the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct in theaters across the US, as part of their Xbox FanFest.

Still, there’s some mystery to what an interactive launch event could be. We know that the game goes into Early Access this coming August 31, 2023. It isn’t exactly like they could offer people play the game early, when we already know that that is happening.

Will Microsoft hold a Starfield dedicated Twitch stream with the audience participation that is expected from that platform? Are they bringing early demos of the game to game stores? Or are they releasing a special demo just for launch, and maybe make it Xbox Series X|S exclusive?

Microsoft does have some good PR going for it, thanks to both that Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct, and recent developments in their pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard King. Microsoft would do well to ride that momentum with something spectacular to launch Starfield. Fans certainly don’t have to wait that long anymore.

Starfield will be releasing on September 6, 2023, on Xbox Series X|S and Windows via Steam. It will also be Day One on Game Pass.
