There are many gaming “events” out in the world for gamers to try and win. Some are your standard local fares where you’ll go to a mall, store, Comic-Con, etc., and have fun beating random people or your friends for a simple prize and bragging rights. But once you get up to the “big leagues,” you have some of the most insane and epic tournaments around. For the fighting game crowd, no event is bigger than EVO. The Evolution Championship Series has changed quite a bit over the last few years, and now they are co-owned by Sony, which will affect things mightily, especially with games like Street Fighter 6.
The upcoming fighting title was revealed to be coming to EVO alongside other fighting titles like Guilty Gear Strive, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Mortal Kombat 11, Tekken 7, MVC 3, and more. But that’s where the twist comes in. If you look at the breakdown of the games, as revealed by Events Hubs, their events, and what kinds of controllers to bring, you’ll notice something curious. Specifically, you’ll see that Street Fighter 6 is the only game listed for the PS5.
Why is that? There are many theories. The biggest one is that the game might be the only one that can “handle” being run on the PS5. What do we mean by that? While the game is coming to multiple platforms, including the PS4/PS5, the Xbox Series X/S line, and the PC, Capcom believes it’ll run best on PS5. Or, since the PS5 is now much more available worldwide after dealing with its shortage issues, Sony wants to push the upcoming title on their freshly available system. But whether that’s a good thing remains to be seen.
Why? When it comes to fighting gamers, they want to play on the system that will let them get the best response from the system. The PS4 is where most games will be played within EVO because the system handles fighting games and has no significant latency issues. In contrast, the latency and other issues were noticeable when multiple fighting games were ported to the PS5. That includes the beta for Street Fighter 6. There were multiple frames of latency when players tried it, so if that were to happen at EVO, gamers won’t be happy. Moreover, Capcom isn’t the best in putting their main fighting game franchise in competitive circuits. So it’s anyone’s guess how this will go.
