Airship Syndicate has released a new trailer for their upcoming turn-based RPG Battle Chasers: Nightwar and you can check it out above. The gameplay is inspired by the likes of classics such as Phantasy Star, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy and the game certainly seems to wear those inspirations on its sleeves.
The video features various characters exploring an overworld via the kind of isometric perspective you’d expect to see in a Diablo or Torchlight game. When it comes to fighting enemies, however, the action shifts to a Final Fantasy-style battle system with two sides competing against each other and attacking in turns.
The game takes places in the same universe as Joe Madureira’s comic book series which was published by WildStorm in 1998. Madureira and several other developers worked on THQ’s Darksiders franchise and established Airship Syndicate in order to make Nightwar.
Publisher Nordic Games, which now owns the rights to Darksiders, is helping make the game a reality but Airship Syndicate also received money from a Kickstarter campaign.
You can find more information about the game on its Kickstarter page.
“Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a love letter to one of our favorite genres of gaming: the JRPG,” Airship Syndicate comments. “We grew up playing legends like Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, and Phantasy Star. While many greats continue to come from Japan, very few western developers are creating them. With your help, we’re going to change that.”
Garrison, Knolan, Monika, and other familiar characters from the Battle Chasers universe are all set to appear in the game.
The game is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
