This probably won’t come as a surprise to many but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has topped the charts on all fronts as the best-selling videogame in October 2022 in the US. Placing at the top in the overall most purchased games in October along with topping the charts for both PlayStation and Xbox game sales Modern Warfare II surpassed over $1 billion in sales in its first 10 days.
Alongside this, Modern Warfare II‘s two-year predecessor Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War rose from 8th position to 7th in October on the Xbox charts. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II‘s success was almost guaranteed with a still strong Warzone player base and the promise of Warzone 2.0 releasing on November 16th, 2022. With updates for the game just around the corner including the return of maps such as Shipment and Shoot House these sales are likely to keep rising and it’ll be interesting to see if Modern Warfare II will top the charts for most sales in November with the release and success of God of War Ragnarok.
This will also be an interesting time for Activision as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the first title in recent memory to be a two-year-long project as opposed to yearly releases from the gaming juggernaut. Call of Duty‘s plans for 2023 includes “the most robust Call of Duty live operations to date, the next full premium release in the blockbuster annual series, and even more engaging free-to-play experiences across platforms.” Next year sees Modern Warfare II‘s “premium” paid expansion created by Sledgehammer. In 2024 Treyarch will release their brand-new Call of Duty project.
Other notable titles to garner large sales this month include Gotham Knights which was the second most sold videogame on all fronts (excluding exclusively Nintendo Switch sales) in October 2022 in the US. Both FIFA 23 and Madden NFL 23 still hold strong at 3rd and 4th place overall. Both Persona 5 and NieR: Automata also jumped the charts considerably with Persona 5 jumping all the way up from 291 to 7th place overall. NieR: Automata made an equally impressive jump from 217 to 19th place overall.
