Sonic Frontiers will arrive on November 8th, and fans are cautiously optimistic about the game. While its initial previews left something to be desired, as time went on, things got better. We got a better look at the islands that players will be on, the combat system Sonic will use in the title, and more. There was even an announcement of a prequel comic that’ll help lead into the game’s events. But for most, the thing they want to see more of is gameplay. Because with a title starring Sonic, it needs to feel like we’re in a constant state of motion.
Thankfully, more previews are dropping as we get closer to release. One such preview came from IGN, where they showed off a 6-minute gameplay demonstration of what it’s like to be on Chaos Island. Recall that Sonic will be on an island chain in the game, and each island will have its own terrain, enemies, obstacles, etc.
One immediately clear thing in the preview is the speed by which you can take on the area. The open-world setting is indeed open to Sonic, and the person behind the controls showcases that in various ways. They speed through section after section, and you can tell that speed is a focus. Another thing to notice is the shift in perspectives. At times, the game embraces an adjustable camera, while other times, it switches to a classic 2D camera. We know from past trailers that Sonic will get into areas that recreate traditional 2D levels from his past, but this is another thing entirely. How many spots like these are in the open world remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to explore and find out.
As players listen to this preview, they’ll hear some very familiar sounds in the game. From Sonic grunting as he goes from spot to spot to losing rings, the nostalgia is there for those who have been around a while. But we also get a glimpse at some new things. That includes the rails in the sky, the elevation of certain paths, and the enemies you can fight. Sonic also is seen collecting various items as he speeds through the levels, something to keep an eye on as you work through the game yourself.
Eagle-eyed fans will also spot an indicator on the screen that states where the next objective for Sonic is. That’ll be helpful, given the vastness of the islands. You’ll never forget where you need to go as you wander around.
Many things in this preview will make fans happy. If nothing else, it looks and feels like a classic Sonic The Hedgehog title. Whether Sonic Frontiers maintains that throughout the game remains to be seen. You can watch the full preview below:
