Pikmin 4 – How To Unlock Purple Pikmin – Tips & Tricks

July 25, 2023 by Adam Carr

There are a whopping 9 types of Pikmin to find in Pikmin 4. Returning from the second game, Purple Pikmin are both strong and elusive.

When Pikmin first graced our consoles back in 2001 we only had access to three types of Pikmin, Red, Blue, and Yellow. With each new game, more Pikmin varieties were added, and Pikmin 4 is no exception to that rule. In fact, Pikmin 4 brings back just about every type of Pikmin the series has had so far. That includes our personal favourite, the chunky Purple Pikmin.

Finding these big lads can take quite some time though, and generating a thriving population of them will take even longer. They are exceptionally rare in the early game, and if you are taking your time (which we recommend), you could go hours upon hours without catching a whiff of one. If you want to get your hands on them, however, you’re in the right place.

Where To Find Purple Pikmin In Pikmin 4

Purple Pikmin don’t have Onions like other Pikmin, and they can’t be found wandering the world. Purple Pikmin exclusively live underground and one of the only ways to get them is to convert them with a Candypop Bud. Of course, you need to find a Purple Candypop Bud before you can do any of that.

Purple Pikmin aren’t unique in this regard as everything from Ice to Rock Pikmin requires a bit more work. Purple Pikmin just appear a bit later in the game, making them especially tantalising to grow.

Serene Shores, Engulfed Castle Cave

To make Purple Pikmin you need to go to Serene Shores, the third area in Pikmin 4. The Cave you are looking for is the Engulfed Castle which you can find hidden under a bridge. Use the screenshot above to pinpoint the exact location.

Even if you get this far you are going to have to put in a bit of work to get your Purple Pikmin. Engulfed Castle is a five-floor Cave AND it has a new enemy, the Nonexistent Entity, that will hunt you down throughout the entirety of this area. We have a separate guide on how to deal with that, here.

Purple Candypop Buds can be found on the fifth floor, although there are only two of them. Not only that, but each Bud can only create five Purple Pikmin.

How To Grow More Purple Pikmin In Pikmin 4

Once you have your first batch of Purple Pikmin you can create more fairly easily. All you have to do is head back to the Engulfed Castle Cave, head to the fifth floor (which you can start at) and convert any 10 Pikmin into Purple Pikmin. You won’t need too many of them, but having a decent supply in case of emergencies doesn’t hurt.

Benefits Of Purple Pikmin In Pikmin 4

Purple Pikmin have a few unique traits that make them very useful whilst out on your adventures. These chunky chaps are as strong and as heavy as 10 regular Pikmin. This makes them excellent at carrying heavy objects and weighing things down. Their incredible heft also lets them cause a gravitational shockwave when they are thrown which is great at stunning enemies.

The only downside to Purple Pikmin is their movement speed. These guys are very slow, so make sure you have them riding Oatchi when things get dangerous.

That’s all we have on Pikmin 4 for now. Be sure to check out our other Guides and Lists for more Pikmin content.
