Amnesia: The Bunker – Map System Explained

June 5, 2023 by Matt Villei

Show me the way out of here!

When exploring the halls of Amnesia: The Bunker, players will need to make sure that they fully grasp and understand the titular underground structure’s layout so that they don’t end up in a dead end with The Beast chasing them. Luckily, there is a map can players can refer to in order to learn the bunker’s many halls and areas, but having a full map to carry around right from the jump would be too good to be true, so allow me to explain just how this map works and how to use it properly. This guide will explain how the map system works in Amnesia: The Bunker.

Map System Explained In Amnesia: The Bunker

Similar to other survival horror games, the map in Amnesia: The Bunker requires players to find different parts of the map to fill in new areas. The main map that players will use throughout the game is also the first map that will be found in the Administration office in the Central Bunker, which will serve as the one and only Save Room throughout the game and is a location that players will revisit often. At the start of the game, the map will only show the start two areas: The Central Bunker and Officer Quarters. The other 4 areas that players will explore are greyed out and while players can tell their location respective to the first two locations and their general size, they won’t be able to see their layout and room locations.

While you can eventually expand this map into displaying the entirety of the bunker, this is not a map that can be brought with you. Players will need to return to Administration in order to view the map.

In order to expand this starting map, players will need to visit each of these locations and find a room with a map of the area inside, usually near the area’s entrance. These rooms are usually locked with no keys, so players will need to get creative by figuring out a way to knock down the door. This can be done in a few ways such as by throwing a heavy cinderblock at the door, shooting an explosive red barrel while it is next to the door, or using a grenade to blow it to bits. Be careful when using the more noisy options like any kind of explosive as it will draw the Stalker to you and being caught in one of these rooms with the small maps can be dangerous since there is only one way in or out. Whichever way a player decides to knock down the door, they will be able to get into the room and get the new part of the map. The individual section map not only can be returned to so players can explore this new area but will also be added to the map in Administration.

As players find notes and gain new objectives, important locations will be marked on both the smaller maps found at the start of each area as well as the map in Administration. When players find all 5 maps in the game and complete the main map in Administration, the Cartographer Achievement will be unlocked. Check out Gameranx’s guide on where to find all the map parts in Amnesia: The Bunker. With all the map parts, players will be able to plan their routes throughout the bunker and stop them from getting lost with the killer beast stalking the tunnels.
