Dredge: How To Obtain Refined Metal

April 6, 2023 by Adam Carr

Everything you need to know to unlock Refined Metal in Dredge.

Dredge is a game full of dangers – both real and imagined, natural and supernatural. Sure, fishing might seem like a peaceful endeavour, but when monsters from the deep start clawing at your hull, and jagged rocks start appearing out of nowhere, you are going to need to upgrade your boat.

One of the ways you can do this is with the help of Refined Metal. Refined Metal is a rare resource that, when given to a Shipwright, can upgrade your Hull. The tougher your Hull, the more hits you can take before sinking to the bottom of the ocean. You might think being able to take 3 hits as standard is enough, but once you start venturing to new locations, you’ll change your tune.

Where To Get Refined Metal

Refined Metal is one of the rarer resources in Dredge. Far more valuable than the likes of basic Lumber or the Scrap you pull up from the ocean. Refined Metal can be found in one of two ways:

  • Randomly via Dredging
  • Buying it from Travelling Merchants.

Dredging

This is the cheapest way to get hold of Refined Metal, but it is also the least reliable. You have a random chance to obtain Refined Metal when Dredging, however, the spots that are going to reward you with Refined Metal are typically hidden behind Rock Walls. These require explosives to clear.

To obtain explosives, be sure to check out our guide as it is tied to Pursuit.

Travelling Merchants

Visiting Travelling Merchants is the easiest way to get hold of Refined Metal, however, it is also the most expensive method by far. It costs a whopping $500 per piece, which is more than 10x the cost of an explosive. Getting hold of that kind of cash is rather difficult, and dropping it all on one resource is certainly a hard choice.

Thankfully, you can fish near a Travelling Merchant and quickly amass a small fortune to offset this cost, although it might take a couple of in-game days. Travelling Merchants all sell different things, so you will need to go to the specific Merchant who sells Refined Metal. You can find them at the Rusty Pontoon in the Gale Cliffs. This is one of the earliest locations you will visit in the game as an early-game quest will encourage you to venture that way anyway.

Once you have your Refined Metal, head to a Shipwright and upgrade your ship. Once you’ve got a sturdier vessel, you should be safe to explore more dangerous waters.

That’s all we have on Dredge for now. Be sure to check out our other Guides and Walkthroughs for more Dredge content. Beware of the terrors hiding in the deep.
