Dredge may be a lighthearted, rather cute-looking fishing romp on the surface, but hidden just below its moist surface, is a slick layer of cosmic horror. Nothing is quite as it seems, and everyone seems rather mad – which doesn’t bode well. Not only that, but the presence of the unknown has led to certain…mysteries.

One of which is the appearance of Aberrant Fish. These fish are as alien to each other, as they are to their regular fish counterparts. Each one is a disturbing mix of something unnatural, whether that be a bloated rotting sack of organs or an ethereal wisp on the edge of your periphery. But how do you catch them? That’s where we come in.

Where To Find Aberrant Fish

Aberrant Fish are found everywhere. Every major location in the game (The Marrows, Starlight Basin, Gale Cliffs, etc.) has a selection of Aberrant Fish to find, and as a general rule, there is an Aberrant to two for every regular fish in the ocean.

Finding them is a little bit down to luck, however, there are some ways to make it a bit easier. Namely, looking for the lights. As you trawl across the ocean, you will occasionally spot blue or gold lights shimmering on the water. These are the places you want to be, and you want to be there ASAP.

These special zones will only last for a short while, and once the light fades, the Aberrant will be gone. Sail up to them, drop a line, and catch the fish. Every Aberrant will be marked in your Encyclopedia, and you will be one step closer to uncovering all the secrets of Dredge.

These lights can be hard to spot during the day, so be sure to explore during the night if you want to acquire these slippery devils.

Using Your Encyclopedia

To make finding Aberrant fish even easier, you can consult your Encyclopedia. Whilst this will mostly be blank, it will have pages for every fish – including Aberrants – and where to find them. Heck, it will even tell you what you need to catch them. For example, in the screenshot we’ve provided, entry #70 can be found in The Marrows, during the day, in a Coastal spot. Boom, it’s that easy.

How to catch them

So the trick with Aberrant Fish, and frankly, ALL fish, is that each one can only be caught using specific methods. Whether that be a Coastal Rod, or an Oceanic Hydraulic Rod. Later in the game, you will need more outlandish pieces of gear, like a rod that can fish in Volcanic regions, or a Rod that can bear the traumas of the Abyss.

It’s difficult to get all the Rods you need on one boat, so be sure to research which Fish you want to catch before heading out, and equip your boat accordingly. Or, consider covering as many types as you can when heading out so you don’t miss a beat.

Dangers Of Aberrant Fishing

Of course, there are dangers when going out and catching Aberrant Fish. Most notable is the time of day – or night in this instance. Fishing at night is dangerous at the best of times, but when you are going out of your way to scour the ocean at night, well, things get a bit hairier.

This could lead to you colliding with rocks if you don’t have a solid light source, being attacked by sea monsters, adverse weather conditions, or even just the gnawing feeling that you are going insane.

Rewards

There are numerous rewards for seeking our Aberrant Fish. The most immediate and obvious would be the drastic increase in value. A Blue Mackerel is only worth $10, but catch a Lumpy Mackerel? Well, you’re looking to quadruple that return.

Outside of the monetary gains, you are also filling out your Encyclopedia, which is great for completionists. Not to mention the Pursuits that require Aberrant Fish to progress/complete.

In short, there is very little reason to not seek these gribblies out, and you’ll be richly rewarded when you do.

That’s all we have on Dredge for now. Be sure to check out our other Guides and Walkthroughs for more Dredge content. Beware of the terrors hiding in the deep.
