The USG Ishimura is anything but a relaxing, safe place for Isaac Clarke as he explores its depths in search of his girlfriend, Nicole. There are plenty of big differences between the original 2008 survival-horror classic and the new Dead Space remake, but one major thing they have in common is the diverse cast of necromorphs that come to attack Isaac.
One of the most challenging monsters to face is the Brute that first appears in Chapter 4: Obliteration Imminent. After meeting up with Hammond in the captain’s nest, you’ll come face to face with the giant necromorph for the game’s first major boss fight. Here’s everything you need to know about taking it out.

Brute Boss Guide
The Brute is a challenging enemy that can tear through you in just a few seconds if you’re not careful. Frontal assaults won’t deal any damage to it thanks to its armor-like plating so, as Hammond suggests, you’ll need to hit its weak points on its back. The weak points are clearly visible, they’re glowing yellow growths, but actually being able to get behind the Brute is a little difficult.
There are two major strategies for taking out the giant necromorph: darting around its attacks and shooting it from behind or simply dousing it in flames. We’ll cover the second method in the section below. If you don’t have any flamethrower ammo, then you’ll need to take it out the old fashion way.
When the Brute first breaks through the wall, hit it with a stasis blast to slow it down and then get behind it and start blasting away at the yellow boils on its back. If you have enough ammo to use the pulse rifle’s proximity mines, shoot those into its back to damage as many pieces of it as you can. If you deal enough damage to one side, one of its arms will fall off and it’ll become much easier to deal with.
If you run out of stasis blasts, you’ll need to get much craftier with your movement. Dodge the swiping punches that the Brute will throw your way and then run past it, quickly turning around to shoot its back. The pulse rifle is the best weapon for this fight (second only to the flamethrower) thanks to its high rate of fire. Once you’ve damaged it enough, the Brute will die and the fight will be over.
How to Cheese the Brute Boss Fight in Dead Space
The absolute easiest way to take care of the Brute is to use the flamethrower. Because the flamethrower deals damage across the necromorph’s entire body over time, you don’t need to get behind it to start dishing out damage. As soon as it breaks through the door in the main atrium, start dousing it in flames. You’ll need to back up between bursts as it’ll constantly be advancing toward you, but you should be able to take it down without much difficulty as long as you have enough gas.
