Last week, Overwatch 2 players were experiencing a serious number of bugs and glitches while trying to play Blizzard’s latest shooter. Perhaps the glitch with the most destructive potential was the auto purchase bug that some players were running into during launch week.
An ongoing bug where you can accidentally make purchases while in the Hero gallery became increasingly prevalent over the course of Overwatch 2‘s first week. This led to players dropping hundreds of coins on unwanted skins and cosmetics and so far they have not been able to get that money refunded.
In order to make sure this doesn’t happen to you, here is what you need to avoid.

What is the Auto Purchase Bug?
The auto purchase bug is an Overwatch 2 glitch that would occur when you would try to use in-game chat while viewing the Hero gallery. First reported by Reddit user Dracyoshi, the purchase happened while he was using the chat to talk to friends while browsing Hero unlocks. All of a sudden, the game had unlocked Junker Queen’s Plutonium skin.
This was apparently happening because the game couldn’t recognize the difference between inputs for navigating the menu and chat inputs. Since the player had enough coins in his account, it only took a couple of button presses to unlock a skin he didn’t want. As the week went on, more users began to report a similar phenomenon.
How to Avoid the Auto Purchase Bug
Initially, the way to avoid the auto purchase bug was to not use the in-game chat feature while in the Hero gallery. Since the game would sometimes mistake inputs while in this menu, a surefire way to avoid a potential charge is not to use the chat feature at all outside of games. Another great way to avoid getting this glitch is to not have any Overwatch coins in your account at all. However, once you start putting time into Overwatch 2 you will begin earning them regardless. As long as you don’t have enough to make even the smallest purchase, though, you shouldn’t have to worry.
Luckily, you won’t have to do much to actively avoid this bug anymore since Blizzard addressed it in a hotfix issued on October 7. Still, even after this update, Blizzard has yet to refund in-game currency to the players impacted by this glitch.
