The most devious magic spell in the Souls series returns in Elden Ring. The spell famously used in Dark Souls 2 was called Chameleon and using it disguised the player like any random inanimate object. Evilly, the Dark Souls 2 DLC actually scripted mini events with AI invaders, giving them the Chameleon spell to bamboozle players. If you played that previous game, you’ll probably want to play tricks on your enemies too — chameleon enemy AI was a high-water mark for evil traps in the Souls series, and while we haven’t encountered any enemies that use transformation spells against us in Elden Ring, we can at least use them as an invader to really mess with our enemies. This is a fun tool for dishonorable invaders only.
The transformation spell is called Mimic’s Veil in Elden Ring. It is hidden a little later in the game — once you reach your first Shardbearer, you’ll be able to get the Mimic’s Veil. It is very easy to miss, so if you’re still searching for it, or just want to get it ASAP for some good old-fashioned Dark Souls trolling, check out the full location in the guide below.

How To Get The Mimic’s Veil | Transformation Item Location Guide
To transform into any random object and perform devious invasion traps, you’ll need the Mimic’s Veil. This special item costs FP to transform into a random object around the environment. Turn it off and on and you’ll get new level geometry objects to turn into. You can become a shrubbery, a statue, or more. From your hiding spot, you can stand still and attack to surprise your prey. After attacking, the disguise will disappear — but you’ve already taken your enemy by surprise. Enjoy felling your foe!
- Found in the King’s Dining Chamber in Stormveil Castle. From the Rampart Tower site of grace, drop down from the upper tower to a small courtyard with a Stonesword Key door.
- The courtyard also has an entrance to a butchery with hanging limbs on chains guarded by a nightmare spider monster.
- Through the room, enter the food preparation kitchen and go upstairs to the dining hall. There’s a chest on the raised platform.
The dining chamber may be accessible from other sections of the castle, but you can reach it immediately after locating the Rampart Tower checkpoint. Right outside, jump onto the tower ledge, circle around, jump onto the ruined tower and drop down through the interior. Follow that path and you’re set to finding the courtyard.
Getting through the “grafting chamber” can be difficult. It is guarded by a unique spider enemy. If you don’t want to fight, just run by it — it won’t be able to follow you upstairs to the dining room. Once you acquire the item, you’ll be free to escape. Just don’t think this will work on regular enemies well. Regular sneaking works better and faster against AI enemies.
