11 Incredible Secrets You Can Find Right At The Start Of Video Games

August 18, 2020 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Games like to slap secrets where you least expect them. Here’s 11 of our favorite early secrets.

Just Keep Sleeping For A Secret Set Of Levels [Wario Land 2]

Wario Land 2 is a sleeper classic platformer, with multiple endings and branching paths for Mario’s nemesis to explore. The funniest of these paths can be unlocked before the game even begins. At the start of the game, Wario’s alarm goes off. You’re meant to jump out of bed to begin your adventure — if you don’t press any buttons at all, you’ll just continue to sleep.

Doing that unlocks a new path leading to a totally different ending. I used to play Wario Land 2 all the time, and I had no idea this ending existed. Lots of players probably discovered this one by accident — it does look like a cutscene, and you’re not supposed to touch any buttons during cutscenes! And it’s easy to put your Gameboy down somewhere and ignore the intro. There might be people out there that think this alternate path is the only path.

Don’t Miss The Mudokons [Oddworld: Abe’s Oddyssey]

To get the good ending in Oddworld: Abe’s Oddyssey, the player has to find literally all the Mudokons in the game and save them. It’s a ridiculously tight requirement for a game that’s already pretty difficult, and players like me were left completely stumped while searching the world. Most of the Mudokons were easy to find! But there was always a handful of missing guys.

It turns out those missing Mudokons are right at the start of the game. As soon as you’re in control, walk right, and duck to climb into a secret factory room below you. It’s hidden behind a foreground object, making this the hardest-to-find set of collectibles that are basically required to fully complete the game.
