Duct Tape Mod & Chicken Puncher [Doom 3]
Doom 3 emphasizes spooky corridors and jump-scares, so it’s no surprise players banded together to create the ‘Duct Tape’ Mod for the original game. See, at release, you couldn’t hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time in Doom 3. You had to swap between the two, and there are long stretches of the game where you’re stuck in almost pitch darkness. That flashlight is required to spot enemies, then you have to shoot in the dark.
The ‘Duct Tape’ mod makes it so your flashlight is on while your gun is out — and it proved so popular that future versions of Doom 3 included the feature as standard. That’s a very un-scary addition!
Speaking of non-scares, there’s also the ridiculous Turkey Puncher machine. Showing off some old-school Doom 1 pixel graphics, your hero punches turkey. It’s silly, and it’s a fun way to teach players how the interactive in-game screens work.
Dog Ending [Silent Hill 2]
Silent Hill games are some of the most disturbing horror games around — so it’s nice to see that the developers aren’t completely insane. They’re kind enough to lighten the load of these extremely heavy games with Easter egg endings. Almost every mainline Silent Hill game has an Easter egg ending or two, but the Dog ending is my personal favorite. It’s hard to even describe.
Basically, game protagonist James discovers a secret dog house lair, with a canine at the elaborate controls of Silent Hill. The mastermind behind the facade is discovered! It’s a farce, and the other UFO endings are playful pokes at America’s obsession with flying sauces. There are tons of UFO endings in the series, but they never did another dog ending.
