Carry Weight is kind of a big deal in The Outer Worlds. Like Fallout 4, Skyrim, or any of the other Bethesda-style RPGs, your Carry Weight is your life — how much stuff you can carry before becoming encumbered can turn your game from a fun jaunt into a nightmarish slog. Thankfully, there are a bunch of ways to increase your Carry Weight in The Outer Worlds — and one way that’s incredibly useful you might not even know about.
What exactly determines your Maximum Carry Weight in The Outer Worlds is actually more complicated than you might realize. It isn’t just your Strength stat. Perks can unlock more Carry Weight, and even your Companions can improve your total Carry Weight — heck, one of the best ways to improve Carry Weight is by using the Workbench. Yep, you can improve Carry Weight with Mods, and it’s a lot more powerful than you might realize.

How To Easily Increase Carry Weight | Maximum Inventory Guide
Carry Weight is the maximum amount of KGs your character can carry before they’re Encumbered. When Encumbered, your character can’t sprint, and can’t fast-travel. You can carry as much stuff as you want, but you’ll be moving a lot slower.
There are a multiple ways to improve Carry Weight — through respec, perks, and workbench mods.
- Use the respec terminal on The Unreliable to increase your Strength stat. It costs bits to respec, so this isn’t the best solution.
- Select perks that increase your carry weight. These are a great solution while leveling up, but they’re limited.
- Install Backpack Utility Mods onto armor to improve Carrying Capacity. Combined with your companions, you can get a total +60kg carry weight.
How To Use Mods To Increase Carry Weight +60kg:
As you progress through the game, you’ll find Armor Mods called Backpack. Backpack Mods increase your carry weight by +20kg. It’s a pretty good find, but did you know that your companions can also equip armor with these mods installed? Instead of having their own inventory, companions increase your total carry weight.
So, if you mod three suits of armor, each one with a Backpack mod, then equip them to you and your two companions, you’ll get a grand total of +60kg carry weight. That’s a huge bonus, and it’s a great way to instantly increase the amount of weight you can carry in the mid-game.
The Best Carry Weight Perks To Pick:
Before you can find all the mods, you’ll have to rely on perks. There are four perks I highly recommend getting to maximize your carry weight.
- Pack Mule (Tier 1): +50kg Carrying Capacity
- Traveler (Tier 1): Fast Travel when Encumbered. Optional but useful!
- Pack of Pack Mules (Tier 2): +40kg Carrying Capacity Bonus from Companions.
- Super Pack Mule (Tier 3): +100kg Carrying Capacity
Get those armor mods, and select a few of these perks, and you’ll conquer your carrying capacity limitations.
