Man of Medan: How To Save (Or Kill!) Everyone | Best & Worst Endings Guide

August 29, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Save (or kill) all your friends in Man of Medan — it’s very tricky to keep everyone alive. Follow our extensive guide to get the best ending.

To get the best ending and unlock the ‘That’s Something, I Suppose‘ achievement / trophy in Man of Medan, you need to keep the five main characters alive — Alex, Brad, Julie, Fliss and Conroy. The prologue characters will always die, and most of the pirates can be killed. You can only save Junior, one of the pirates, and I recommend keeping them alive.

Failing QTEs can also get you killed. Do your best to successfully complete every QTE. If a character dies, you’ll have to restart from the chapter they died in — all future chapters will change to reflect that death.

How To Save (Or Kill!) Everyone | Best & Worst Endings Guide

WARNING: It’s better to avoid picking up ANY WEAPONS. Do not pick up knives or other weapons you find in your playthrough. If you don’t have weapons, you won’t harm your friends later in the story.

To get the best ending, you need to make sure your relationships are strong. To do that, you need to say the right things in dialogue. Below, I’ll quickly summarize which dialogue options to select for each chapter, and anything else you need to know.

    • Apologetic
    • Supportive
    • Say Nothing
    • Say Nothing
    • Appreciative

Chapter: Intrusion [Conrad]

The pirates board your ship at night and capture everyone. Don’t resist the pirates — don’t press any QTE buttons at the start.

In this sequence, ungag Fliss and Alex, then wait for Fliss to be taken by Junior. Untie yourself, then be prepared to press [Square] to avoid being punched. After this, you’ll encounter the leader Olson.

  • Conrad Talks To Olson:
    • Serious
    • Agitated
    • Compliant
  • Conrad Talks To Alex:
    • Uneasy
    • Concerned

After this, you’ll have to complete a series of QTEs without failing. Time your hits with the countdown, and successfully escape on the speedboat without anyone getting hurt. Even if you fail one part of this QTE, it’s possible to still escape without getting hurt if you finish the rest.

Chapter: Storm [Fliss]

During this conversation, be prepared to complete QTEs. Help Julia when you can.

  • Fliss Talks To Pirate:
    • Reassuring
    • Enraged
    • Defiant
    • Say Nothing
    • Optimistic

That ends Act 1 with everyone alive. You’re 1/3rd complete!

Chapter: Abandoned Ship [Fliss]

Nothing here, but you can find a collectible that will unlock a conversation in the next chapter. After Danny searches the lockers, find the [Guard Duty Note] collectible down the hall.

Chapter: Trapped [Fliss]

Locked in the dark room, be prepared for a QTE [Square] and tell Alex to be [Assertive]. If you found the Guard Duty Note, you can talk to Alex.

  • Fliss Talks To Alex:
    • Serious
    • Lively

Later, push the crate and reveal a hidden vent. While Alex is working on the vent, talk to him.

Chapter: An Escape [Alex]

This chapter involves a lot of exploration.

  • Alex Talks To Fliss:
    • Dubious
    • Warn Fliss

Chapter: Caskets [Alex]

At the beginning of the chapter, you’ll be able to collect your first weapon. Do not pick it up! Don’t collect any of the weapons you find. In the first room of the kitchen, examine the cupboard for a short talk.

  • Alex Talks To Julia:
    • Truthful

Leaving the second room, you’ll automatically start another dialogue with Julia.

  • Alex Talks To Julia:
    • Worried
    • Supportive

Investigate then leave the medbay to complete the chapter.

Chapter: Danny [Fliss]

In this chapter, you’ll be escorted by the pirate. Follow him until he disappears, then explore to reach the Cargo Hold. Ignore the knife here, don’t pick it up. Leave the cargo area to change perspectives.

Chapter: Finding Friends [Brad]

If you avoiding a fight with the pirates, Brad will still be on the original boat where he wasn’t discovered by the pirates. While exploring the Ghost Ship, pass through the screamer room. Investigate the right lockers to obtain the Gas Mask.

Continue to explore and climb the wall. Don’t pick up the wrench ahead.

Chapter: Ritual [Fliss]

Continue until you reach the Ballroom. There’s a timer in this area, so you need to act fast. Go to the room behind the stage and pull the lever to reveal the stage. Go backstage to step outside for fresh air. If you get fresh air, it stops the hallucination — you’ll also see Brad as a normal human.

If Brad collected the Gas Mask earlier, he won’t be effected by the mist. If Fliss got fresh air on the deck, she won’t be effected. You’ll be able to talk to Brad instead.

  • Fliss Talks To Brad:
    • Approving

Chapter: Pressure [Fliss]

This chapter only occurs if both Fliss and Brad aren’t affected by the mist.

Continue until you have to climb up. Check the Old Shovel, Broken Ladder, and Hatch. Talk to Brad, and water will flood the room while Brad is trapped — if you checked the Old Shovel, Fliss will immediately go get it. Smash the hinges to end the chapter.

Chapter: Plunged [Julia]

This is a short spooky chapter, but there’s nothing special you need to do here.

  • Julia Talks To Alex:
    • Frantic

Chapter: Revenge [Julia]

Completing this chapter will end Act 2.

Chapter: Open Deck [Julia]

A very short chapter. You can’t improve relationships here, so make these choices to avoid making things worse.

  • Julia Talks To The Group:
    • Baffled
    • Probing
    • Suspicious
    • Unsettled

Chapter: Distress Signal [Alex]

This is a VERY IMPORTANT CHAPTER if you want everyone to survive or die. When you find the radio, DO NOT CALL FOR HELP. When you use the radio to contact the military station, [Say Nothing].

If you call for help, the soldiers will either kill everyone or put everyone in jail.

  • Alex Talks To Brad:
    • Encouraging

  • Brad Talks To Julia:
    • Assertive

Next, you’ll encounter Olson. Complete the QTE so that you can escape without being noticed by Olson. Danny, the pirate, will die no matter what. In the pirate’s room, [Inspect] to find Julia’s Engagement Ring.

Chapter: Junior [Brad & Julia]

For this chapter, you need to avoid being found by Olson. If you avoid him, you’ll keep the Rebreather, which you’ll need to save Junior. Complete both QTEs, and select [Assertive].

In the next room, you’ll encounter Junior. If you have the Rebreather, you can save him.

  • Brad & Julia Talk To Junior:
    • Curious
    • Worried
    • Desperate

Choose to [Grab The Pistol] when you can. You’ll use the Rebreather to calm him down, saving his life.

Chapter: Matters Of The Heart

In this chapter, you absolutely must get the Distributor Cap from Olson’s corpse. If you fail the QTE here, the cap will be destroyed and there is no way to escape.

The hallucinations are getting worse. DO NOT attack any demons, and DO NOT attack the rats coming out of your body. Let the timer run out. If you attack any demons (or demonic rats) you’ll kill an innocent person or yourself.

After this, Fliss and Alex will escape, ending the final chapter with everyone still alive. If you did everything right, you’ll earn the ‘That’s Something, I Suppose‘ achievement / trophy.
