#5 Super Mario Maker 2
After previously getting its start on the last generation Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems, Nintendo was proud to announce a much-desired sequel to Super Mario Maker. The announcement came during February’s Nintendo Direct where we got a look at the new setup and tools that players will have access to when creating custom Super Mario levels. This trailer didn’t get into the fine details as to what all has changed but Nintendo did confirm that there will be a few new features along with elements for the title when it’s set to release in June of this year. For those of you who may not be aware of what Super Mario Maker was we’ll give a quick recap. Super Mario Maker is a video game in which players are given the tools to create their own custom Super Mario levels.
Outside of being able to customize how the level plays out with various enemies and obstacles, players could tweak the assets and visuals from the variety of Super Mario video game titles. Now with a sequel underway and a popular handheld console hybrid, we imagine that there will be a very active community of players who will deliver unique Mario levels online for others to enjoy.
#4 Team Sonic Racing
Nintendo really set the bar high when it comes to kart racers thanks to the Mario Kart franchise. While Nintendo is doing well with their exclusive franchise, Sega has opened up the Sonic Racing series from the start in 2010 with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Essentially, this is very similar to the Mario Kart gameplay but instead of Mario and the cast of Nintendo characters, you’ll be trading them off for a cast from Sega’s line of video game titles along with tracks designed around their various IPs. This upcoming title will be similar to the previous two installments though developers, Sumo Digital, are hoping it stands out enough to be its own title when it launches into the market later this year.
One of the ways that Sumo Digital is making Team Sonic Racing different compared to previous installments is that they are dropping out all IPs outside of Sonic. Instead, the installment will solely be based around Sonic, the cast of characters within it, and likely memorable courses made from the franchise. Whether dropping the rest of the Sega line of IPs from the title will hurt the number of units sold for the game remains to be seen.
#3 The Surge 2
Development studio, Deck13, has been around since 2002 with some of their latest titles being 2014’s Lords of the Fallen and 2017’s The Surge. The latter of the two will be seeing a sequel sometime in 2019 with publishers Focus Home Interactive.
The Surge was a science fiction action RPG which takes place in the future where humanity has used up the various world resources. As a result, humanity becomes strained with most seeking use of technological advances to maintain their daily lives.
Mimicking the Souls series, The Surge franchise is aimed to be a difficult RPG with players encouraged to upgrade their exoskeleton suit for battles. So far, we know that this upcoming sequel will take place in a brand new city environment with larger level designs and a tweaked combat mechanic to offer more tactical strategy.
#2 Tom Clancy’s: The Division 2
The Division 2 takes place just a few months before a year after the events of the first installment. Instead of ridding The United States of America with a disease and terrorism, agents within The Division are forced into battle the government. Much of the nation has been cleared which resulted in the government groups to rise and set up strict rules.
Now with innocent civilians dealing with uncertain futures, The Division must start a new civil war. Already there is future DLC planned for the game with the first year promising three expansion packs which add story and activities. During E3 2018 it was confirmed that everyone who purchases a copy of the game will receive the DLC packs completely free.
#1 Wolfenstein: Youngblood
A new Wolfenstein game is in the works with the title set during the 1980s. Instead of following the past main protagonist BJ, Wolfenstein: Youngblood will center around the protagonist’s twin daughters who will be fighting against the Nazi regime. While there haven’t been too many details about the game released into the public quite yet, we do know that the game will feature cooperative gameplay.
