The 30 Biggest Video Game Franchises Returning In 2019

April 3, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

2019 is full of returning video game franchises.

#20 Kingdom Hearts 3

Kingdom Hearts III finally came out into the marketplace in 2019. The game was highly anticipated as Square Enix took years to bring out the third installment. Of course, this game franchise is known for a complex narrative thanks to the side story game releases, but you will get a good recap of what you need to know if you jump right into the third installment. Regardless, this single player video game follows Sora and his gang as he embarks on a journey that takes him to a wide range of Disney themed worlds such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, and Frozen. Overall, the game will have players collecting keyblades and stopping the heartless and bringing back a peaceful state. If you enjoy action RPG titles then this is one game you should consider picking up.

#19 The Last of Us: Part 2

In 2013, if you didn’t already own a PlayStation 3, Naughty Dog gave you a reason to pick one up. The Last of Us released to become a massive hit and won countless awards. In fact, just a year later, the game received a remastered edition for the PlayStation 4.

Overall, without spoiling too much of the narrative, The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure game. Most of the world has been turned into a fungus-like zombie while players predominantly took control of an older man named Joel. Throughout the game, Joel is traveling across the country to protect and deliver a young girl named Ellie to a government opposing group.

For fans who have been eagerly awaiting a chance to revisit the world and our protagonists again, it looks like we may get that opportunity in 2019. Little information has been released regarding the upcoming game, though we do know that this title will see a return in both Joel and Ellie along with a time jump of five years.

#18 The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

In a surprise announcement from Nintendo during the February Nintendo Direct upload, gamers were unveiled that The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will make a return. After years of waiting Nintendo is currently remaking the title for the Nintendo Switch and it already has a few brief gameplay footage tidbits in the announcement trailer. We see that Nintendo is keeping with the top-down view with a more cartoonish visual aesthetic. Likewise, there are liked some new gameplay mechanics and adjustments to suit the Nintendo Switch power when compared to the original Game Boy release. Regardless, the title didn’t get too many details in regards to what gamers can expect but we do know that Nintendo is hoping to bring the game out sometime this year.

#17 Luigi’s Manson 3

The Luigi’s Mansion series doesn’t have very many installments attached. Outside of its main debut on the Nintendo GameCube, the series only has one other console installment for the Nintendo 3DS called Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. With the franchise, players are put into the role of Luigi who must bust a variety of ghosts and while we knew that the original installment was soon finding a release again in the market for the Nintendo 3DS, it came as a surprise that a third installment was in the works.

During a September 2018 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed that Luigi’s Mansion 3 is being developed for the Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any details as to what this third installment will entail quite yet, but it’s supposedly coming into the market in 2019.

We’re likely going to see some type of Joy-Con motion controller gameplay featured within the game but again, at this point, we’re simply speculating as to what we can expect from the upcoming installment.

#16 Mario Kart Tour

Mario Kart is a long-running series and it’s not something that would be unfamiliar to you. This kart racer takes a series of characters from the Mario franchise and pins them against each other in a series of track races full of power-ups and weapons. This series has been exclusive to Nintendo’s platform release however that is soon changing as its one of the game series of Nintendo’s that will be launching on both iOS and Android.

This game is slated to launch within the Summer of 2019 and we haven’t actually received any footage or gameplay for this title. Instead, we only know that the game will be free-to-start much like Super Mario Run.
