Top Upcoming JRPG Video Games of 2019

June 12, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

The very best JRPG video games launching in 2019.

Town
  • Developer: Game Freak
  • Publisher: Nintendo
  • Platforms: NS
  • Release: 2019

Known mostly for the line of Pokemon video game titles, developers Game Freak, will be bringing out a brand new IP exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. This game will for the most part take the same feel as the Pokemon titles in the sense that this is still very much a turn-based combat RPG. Not a lot is known right now about the game but from what Nintendo has shown off so far, players will be living in a old village that mysteriously started to attract and spawn monsters. Its up to the players to defeat the monsters and figure out what is causing the occurrence.

Dragon Quest Builders 2
  • Developer:  Square Enix
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platforms: PS4, NS
  • Release: July 12, 2019

Dragon Quest Builders is a sandbox action RPG that’s set within the world of Alefgard. This is a more lighthearted adventure with similar visuals to titles such as Minecraft and Terraria. In the narrative, players are off to revive the world which has been flooded with monsters, however, in order to rebuild the world players must also seek out and manage resources.

The video game doesn’t feature a complex combat system like the main installments within the franchise. Furthermore, the title has since already launch on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita platforms whereas the PlayStation 3 version of the game remains a Japanese exclusive. It was only until this past year that Nintendo Switch owners were able to get a copy of this game but it looks like this won’t be the last installment to the Builder series of Dragon Quest. A sequel is currently in the works and its slated to launch within July of this year.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Publisher: Square Enix
  • Platforms: 3DS, PS4, PC, NS
  • Release: TBA (NS)

One of the classic JRPG series is having a release in 2019. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age had already released for most platforms but a port is coming soon for the Nintendo Switch. We’re unsure if there will be any notable differences between the port at this time, but if you have yet to play the latest Dragon Quest main installment then you’ll get another chance on the Nintendo Switch hopefully within this coming  year.

This upcoming title focuses on the world of Lotozetasia after the discovery of an ancient hero who has become reincarnated. Players take on the role of this ancient hero and must save the world from the monsters and troubles that have flooded into the land. As always, you can expect the traditional turn-based battle system to be present within the game as well.

Code Vein
  • Developer: Bandai Namco Studios
  • Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XO
  • Release: 2019

Code Vein is an upcoming title being developed by Shift, which you may know from their past works such as the God Eater franchise. Since its announcement, little information was given out in regards to Code Vein, although, thanks to the Tokyo Game Show in 2018, a narrative trailer was unveiled.

This is an action role-playing video game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that is flooded with vampires. It seems that the worlds blood supply is running thin and as a result, there’s become a division between vampires.

Our protagonist is a rookie who must fight against the Queen and the corrupted bloodthirsty vampires that gave their allegiance to this seemingly unstoppable force. Being an action role-playing video game, there’s more freedom in how players attack their opponents, but the developers have opted to run with a Dark Souls style approach making fights more strategic.
