Death Stranding
- Developer: Kojima Productions
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: TBA
Death Stranding is a big title, yet it’s the first to be released under a brand new development studio. You’re likely aware of the famed and beloved developer, Hideo Kojima, whose most notable work is the Metal Gear series. Hideo became a superstar with gamers all over the world as he worked under Konami, but that came to a halt in 2015 when it was announced that Konami and Kojima had officially split.
This resulted in the cancellation of another fan favorite series from Konami, Silent Hill, as Kojima was in the process of working on a brand new game for the franchise that had plenty of gamers interested. It wasn’t long before Kojima revealed that he had opened up his own development studio, Kojima Productions, where their first video game release would be Death Stranding.
Very few details have been released about the game with trailers and teasers being more cryptic as to what is going on within the narrative. However, Hideo Kojima seemed to enjoy making a deep narrative story for his video game titles in the past and we fully expect Death Stranding to receive the same treatment.
Jedi: Fallen Order
- Developer: Respawn Entertainment
- Publisher: Electronic Arts
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2019
Respawn Entertainment, the development team who has brought out the Titanfall franchise, has been working on a secret Star Wars project. For quite some time now, we’ve known that the developers were working on a Star Wars related video game, but no details regarding the title were released. That all changed during EA’s E3 2018 press conference, where we got a few very small details regarding this upcoming title.
Within the game, players will be taking on the role of a padawan that managed to survive after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Set during the dark ages, players will attempt to survive in a world where the Jedi is outnumbered and quickly being hunted down. This is a single-player focused game with no multiplayer component. As a result, the narrative is the center focus. Unfortunately, as we mentioned this is a game title that Respawn Entertainment is fairly quiet about so we’re still waiting for more details to emerge about the game.
Gears of War 5
- Developer: The Coalition
- Publisher: Microsoft Studios
- Platforms: XBO, PC
- Release: 2019
Gears of War has had an interesting narrative journey attached to the game but this fifth installment may change some things up. Players will be taking on the role of a woman named Kait Diaz who has been dealing with visions.
Instead of moving on with The Coalition Army, Kait is determined to find out what the visions mean in what could be a journey that will reveal the truth behind the Locust origins. While gameplay will still be action heavy, the narrative has already peaked our interest.
Judge Eyes
- Developer: Sega
- Publisher: Sega
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2019
Sega has been teasing a new IP for a while now stating that the developers who were behind the popular Yakuza series have been working on a brand new IP. This project has apparently been in the works for over three years but we’re only just now getting a look at the game. Gamers can expect Judge Eyes to release next year.
There are still plenty of details that Sega is holding away from the public at the moment but during a PlayStation Lineup Tour event, Sega unveiled Judge Eyes. The game follows a lawyer who is seeking out clues in order to get at the bottom of a crime. Being that this is the development team who was also responsible for bringing out the Yakuza series, you can expect a similar combat system.
Being that this game is developed under the creators of the Yakuza series, we expect an in-depth narrative journey. Their Yakuza series alone had a story and characters that spanned across several video game titles and this game is all about solving a crime. We’re also likely going to see plenty of extra tools that our protagonist has in his arsenal to uncover even more details for your narrative journey.
Twin Mirror
- Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
- Platforms: PC, PS4, XBO
- Release: 2019
Dontnod Entertainment has a new episodic adventure title for players to enjoy. The development studio may be best known for their Life is Strange series but the next episodic journey coming this year that’s not attached to the Life is Strange franchise is Twin Mirror. This is an upcoming psychological thriller which follows a protagonist named Sam who returns back to his old hometown to attend a funeral service of his best friend. Things take a turn for the worse when he awakens with no memories of the previous day while covered in blood.
One thing that Dontnod Entertainment takes care of when it comes to their video games is the narrative journey players will be embarking. Life is Strange was a critical hit and it sparked a huge following. Their follow-up title, Vampyr was also enjoyed from its narrative thanks to the various choices that came up in conversations along with the atmosphere. Both IPs have been considered for television series adaptations and as a result, a story-driven journey is something that we fully expect from their line of video games. Twin Mirror already has an enticing story from the little information we have received so far and knowing that the game is another episodic journey then it’s a safe bet that players will be left with cliffhanger endings.
