The Last of Us Part 2
- Developer: Naughty Dog
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: TBA
Since the late 1990s, Naughty Dog became a household name for Sony fans. From developing Crash Bandicoot, Jax and Daxter and the Uncharted series, chances are you’ve played at least through one of these franchises.
In 2013, if you didn’t already own a PlayStation 3, Naughty Dog gave you a reason to pick one up. The Last of Us released to become a massive hit and won countless awards. In fact, just a year later, the game received a remastered edition for the PlayStation 4.
Overall, without spoiling too much of the narrative, The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure game. Most of the world has been turned into a fungus-like zombie while players predominantly took control of an older man named Joel. Throughout the game, Joel is traveling across the country to protect and deliver a young girl named Ellie to a government opposing group.
For fans who have been eagerly awaiting a chance to revisit the world and our protagonists again, it looks like we may get that opportunity in 2019. Little information has been released regarding the upcoming game, though we do know that this title will see a return in both Joel and Ellie along with a time jump of five years.
Death Stranding
- Developer: Kojima Productions
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: TBA
Hideo Kojima is a widely known and beloved video game developer. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, chances are you’ve heard or played through his franchise, Metal Gear Solid. Before the announcement of his latest upcoming installment and IP, Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima was being carefully watched.
It’s been widely covered before when it came to Hideo Kojima’s and Konami’s split. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain became his last installment in the franchise where it was also revealed that the famed developer would be taking on another Konami fan favorite IP, Silent Hill.
With a successful announcement and hype surrounding a new Silent Hill title, Hideo Kojima and Konami parted ways leaving both Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill on the table for the studio. Though it wasn’t very long after his Konami split that the developer revealed Kojima Productions, his own game development studio.
The first title to be in the works for Kojima Productions is Death Stranding, a video game that has been very much kept in secrecy since its unveiling. Described to be an action title, Death Stranding will play on a narrative that connects life and death.
Days Gone
- Developer: SIE Bend Studio
- Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: 2019
Days Gone was highly anticipated and an expected video game of 2018, however, that didn’t come to fruition as the developers behind the game had it delayed for a release in the following year. The wait comes to an end at some point in 2019.
This is another post-apocalyptic video game where the story takes set two years after the fall of humanity. Much of the world had gone into a survival mode where groups form to strengthen an alliance against the zombie-like creatures that have taken control of the predatory food chain.
What we know so far in this game is that players will take control of Deacon St. John. Prior to the world corruption, Deacon St. John was a bounty hunter, but now Deacon finds that he must use his skills and traits of being a bounty hunter toward his advantage just to stay alive.
Judgement
- Developer: Sega
- Publisher: Sega
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: 2019
Sega has been teasing a new IP for a while now stating that the developers who were behind the popular Yakuza series have been working on a brand new IP. This project has apparently been in the works for over three years but we’re only just now getting a look at the game. Gamers can expect Judge Eyes to release next year.
There are still plenty of details that Sega is holding away from the public at the moment but during a PlayStation Lineup Tour event, Sega unveiled Judgement. The game follows a lawyer who is seeking out clues in order to get at the bottom of a crime. Being that this is the development team who was also responsible for bringing out the Yakuza series, you can expect a similar combat system.
Spelunky 2
- Developer: Mossmouth LLC
- Publisher: Mossmouth LLC
- Platforms: PS4
- Release: 2019
For those of you who enjoyed Spelunky, an indie platformer roguelike that followed a spelunker roaming a series of caves to collect treasure along with saving those stuck then you will be delighted to know a sequel is in the works. Not a ton of information has been put out yet but we do know that this will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. Players will not take control of the same protagonist, instead, our adventurer from yesteryear had settled down and started a family. Within the sequel, you’ll be playing as the daughter, Ana Spelunky.
The game will still retain the same overall mechanics and aspects from the past video game installment. However, the development studio has stated that they wanted this upcoming sequel to serve not only as a continuation to the story but as a means to further expand the mechanics and feel of the game as you progress through it. We don’t have a release date yet, but be prepared to explore new cave systems and collect even more treasure sometime this year.
