Neil Druckmann Commits To More Last Of Us Multiplayer Info This Year

March 15, 2023 by Ryan Parreno

Naughty Dog would be mistaken if they think their fans will wait forever on their one multiplayer title, in a sea of similar games.

Neil Druckmann has made a commitment to fans: Naughty Dog will share more information on The Last Of Us Multiplayer later this year.

As covered by PSU, the studio will definitely have to speak about it this year because it is their next big title.

Speaking to the Kinda Funny podcast, this is what Druckmann had to say about the game:

“It’s an interesting experience for me because it’s the first Last of Us game where I’m not the primary writer, I’m not the primary director. What the team has put together is so cool. It’s very different from what I would do but that’s part of the exciting thing about it, with other people playing in this world.”

While it doesn’t seem like that big a deal, this commitment is important because Naughty Dog have been very scarce in sharing details about The Last Of Us Multiplayer in the past few years. We can corroborate that with our coverage as well.

The very earliest we had discussed this was in 2021, when job listings Naughty Dog opened made it clear to the public that they had started full development on The Last Of Us Multiplayer.

They made the official announcement for the game on Summer Games Fest 2022, and later shared more details about its setting, connecting it to the Factions multiplayer mode in the original release of The Last Of Us.

Jump to this year and we had been receiving small drip feeds of official news and rumors about The Last Of Us Multiplayer.

Neil Druckmann openly opined that it was Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game, some Naughty Dog devs tweeted about a minor development detail, there was a rumor that the game was also coming to PlayStation 4, and that was it.

On one level, Naughty Dog would be prudent not to share anything about The Last Of Us Multiplayer if those details hadn’t been settled to be in the final game, or if they are still so early in development that they also aren’t sure what they are going for.

But this is a case of far too little information for too long. While Sony fans will certainly be holding onto and waiting for this game, with the release of Redfall pending on rival Microsoft’s platforms, Naughty Dog can’t be resting on their laurels.

Arkane Studios was similarly reticent on details for Redfall for some time, but they didn’t keep fans hanging on to nothing for too long. Naughty Dog is mistaken if they think gamers will wait on their game forever – there are tons of competitors in that online multiplayer space, even right now.

Hopefully we will be learning that much more about The Last Of Us Multiplayer sooner rather than later.
