Nintendo Switch Comes in 2 Colour Models, Supports Region Unlocked Software

January 13, 2017 by Katrina Filippidis

Glamorous grey, Neon blue and Neon red. Delicious.

After a general introduction and the revelation of several upcoming games, the Nintendo Switch presentation went into a detailed breakdown of the system hardware. Along with the main body of the console, the Switch will be accompanied by two Joy-Con controllers, Joy-Con grips and straps, a Nintendo Switch Dock, HDMI cable, and AC adapter. The Switch Pro Controller will come separately.

The Touch Screen clocks in at 6.2 inches, is multi-touch capacitive and supports resolutions of 1280 x 720. When played undocked, battery life can last for up to six hours, but this largely depends on the software used and usage conditions. Nintendo cites The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as an example, claiming the game can be played for approximately three hours using a single charge.

Although the game cards might resemble the miniature cartridges used in Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, it seems Nintendo Switch will not be cross-compatible with cartridges from older systems, including Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U. A departure from the 3DS model, Nintendo Switch software will not be region locked, meaning that all Switch games will be accessible regardless of where you live.

Upon its worldwide release this March 3, Nintendo Switch will come in one of two versions: Nintendo Switch with two grey Joy-Cons, and a Nintendo Switch with with neon blue and neon red Joy-Cons. Both will retail for $299.99 USD.

Stay tuned for the Nintendo Treehouse event, which is scheduled for Jan. 13, 6:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. ET. If you missed the Nintendo Switch presentation, you can check it out here. Over the next 24 hours, there will be Nintendo Switch hands on events happening in London, New York, Paris and London.
