After a ten year development cycle fraught with multiple delays, The Last Guardian now has a confirmed release date, much to the delight of fans. To celebrate the impending release, an evocative cinematic trailer is being played in US theatres.
In the trailer, we see a young boy being chased by a pack of armed warriors. He is quickly cornered into a life-threatening situation where faith becomes more important than ever. Trico, a gigantic, feathered griffin-like creature faces him from across the chasm, seemingly encouraging the boy to make a decision. He eventually takes the plunge, symbolising the beginning of an ambiguous relationship that will define the nature of various puzzles and game mechanics.
Creative director Fumito Ueda recently spoke about some of his inspirations for the game and its connection to Shadow of The Colossus on a Playstation Blog post:
“The way I see it, maybe they are from the same world, or the same universe. But anything further than that is really up to the player’s imagination. Everyone has a different level of relationship with the two previous titles, so we wouldn’t dictate that it is or it isn’t. It’s up to the player.”
The Last Guardian is out on Dec 6 for PS4.
