Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a massive hit when it first launched into the marketplace. I don’t think very many people expected it to be as big a success as it was. However, Sandfall Interactive knocked it out of the park. Now that The Game Awards are taking place this evening, we’re all wondering if this incredible game, in so many players’ eyes, will be taking home the Game of the Year award.
But before we get to the ceremony event that will be held this evening, one question on a lot of players’ minds is the ending of this game. Just a fair warning: we’ll get a bit into the spoilers for this title, so if you haven’t already played through the game and want to avoid how things end, it’s best to back out now!
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Endings Left All Players Wondering Which Was Good

If you played through Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, then you know it ultimately comes down to two different endings. You have essentially Maelle getting her way by keeping this painted world and those within it alive. However, it leaves a very ominous ending that suggests things will now turn out well for the character. Then you have Verso, who manages to bring the world down, essentially saving Maelle while allowing the family to grieve more healthily.
There’s, of course, more to it with each ending if you played through the game. But fans have been wondering just which ending is considered good, and not even the developers can tell you. Speaking with GameSpot, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s creative director, Guillaume Broche, was asked about this very topic.
That’s something we’ve had a lot of arguments about in the team too! I think your reaction to the endings, and which one is the “good” ending, is super subjective and related to your own personal experiences in real life. And I think that’s a strength of our writing and story–kudos to our Lead Writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, and our amazing mocap and voice actors for their performances–sometimes there is no clear “good” or “bad” choice in life that everyone will be happy with, and living within the grey, and those complex choices, are what makes us real people. Ultimately, what matters is your own interpretation of the ending and of the story.
So it really does come down to each player. Of course, if the developers advance the storyline in another game, we’ll likely have to see one ending become canon. That’s pure speculation, as we don’t know what this talented team is coming up with next. But one thing is for sure, and that there are more than a few eyes on this team now, thanks to the incredible success of their debut title.
