If there’s a word in general to describe the gaming industry right now…it’s polarizing. You see, when the gaming industry hits, it REALLY hits, and you can look at various titles released in 2025 to highlight that point. However, in recent times, when it misses, it’s absolutely frustrating, and you can look at various titles across the last several years for examples of that. Enter Borderlands 4, which has indeed gotten “Frustrating” status due to numerous woes that it’s had since its release in September. Yet, on Reddit, there are some who legitimately wonder why the game has been so “polarizing” to many:
“I personally love it but ive seen so many people absolutely hate it. So whats up? Does the game have actual problems or do people just like b*tching. so far after about 30 hours i have very few problems with the game. It runs smooth on ps5 the side missions memorable it doesn’t rely on nostalgia the map is really good and the movement is fantastic. The level scaling and weapon drop rates are also in my opinion the best in the franchise.
my only problems are that the story and villain aren’t that interesting but im comparing it to bl2 and thats a high bar.”
It’s interesting that even in this poster’s remarks, they point out what they feel is wrong with the game. It’s also important to note that they’re playing on PS5, which is arguably the best system to play it on.
The answers the person got about Borderlands 4 really hit the nail on the head about why it’s polarizing to others. It’s not that it’s a “bad game,” per se, but that it came out looking and playing like a title that was rushed out and wasn’t given time to be refined:
“You nailed it, plus there are too many bugs. Immortal bosses blocking progression, multi-bosses disappearing, weird design decisions(bank sorting options, etc)…..it feels like it needed another 6 months of bake time.”
A lot of people noted that the endgame content is “nonexistent,” and that might easily explain why the player count for the title has plummeted since release. Others noted that the “open-world” element was rather “hollow” and that the game didn’t “grab them” as other titles did.
And as teased, the optimization issues has been a key factor since launch, especially for certain consoles and the PC version. We still haven’t heard about when the Switch 2 version will finally drop!
While some people may be exaggerating why they don’t like the game, the fact remains that it’s far from the title that was promised in many respects.
