Are Pistols “Underwhelming” In Borderlands 4?

December 1, 2025 by Todd Black

Not every weapon is for everyone.

One of the things that Gearbox Software has done for its FPS/RPG franchise is ensure that the weapon options that players have in the game are plentiful. That’s part of the reason why there are BILLIONS of weapons within the game itself. If you are having trouble with one kind or style of weapon, there are others for you to use. This trend continued in Borderlands 4, and the results have varied from player to player. While many are able to find the ones they want and attempt to get the builds they desire for their characters, others are having trouble with certain weapon classes.

For example, on the Borderlands 4 Reddit, one player asked if certain types of pistols are a bit underwhelming:

“Maliwan or vladof pistols should make a return. Do you guys think they will make changes like that in upcoming dlcs? New license parts and new weapons? Not just legendaries.”

Upon putting out the signal for these pistols, some did “answer the call” to let them know that they weren’t alone in wanting those particular kinds of pistols back:

“Without Vladof Pistols. The world seems…empty :(“

“I also loved vladof pistols in the last few games.”

“They can end up doing some of the funniest things with an infinity pistol.

E.g. Hyperion + CoV attachments to get a focused laser beam like the fond memories of the infinite angry smasher glitch.”

Others pointed out that some of the pistols within the game are good enough to get the job done:

“I recently looted a tedior pistol with torgue stickies and an ability that upon reload 4 copies of the pistol are thrown like homing missiles and do some serious damage.

Not bod elite of course but when the eventual bod nerf happens im going to revist this pistol. So far its cleared all content with 0 issue.”

“Most likely because of build and gear, pistols feel pretty good to me. Queens Rest, Bully, Seventh Sense, Inscriber and even Noisy Cricket do work. We shall see if we get Maliwan or Vladdy Pearlescent pistols.”

So, it appears that there isn’t a true consensus as to whether pistols are indeed “underwhelming.” That being said, the point from before still stands. If you feel that the game’s pistols aren’t working well for you, you should go and attempt a different class of weapon. Or, you can attempt to mod the pistols you have so that they can do more of the damage you prefer.
