There are many things that Nintendo is “king of,” and one of them is cranking out unique titles that you would swear wouldn’t work and “won’t succeed,” and then they do work and sell huge. For example, ever since the Wii era, they’ve been almost obsessed with having workout titles for their player base. That’s where we got the Wii Fit Trainer if you recall. Then, when the Nintendo Switch came around, they made a title called Ring Fit Adventure. The game used the Joy-Cons and their incredible sensitivity to craft a unique workout experience in a fantasy world. When the global pandemic hit, sales of the game spiked as players needed a new way to work out.
Why are we bringing this up now, on the eve of the Nintendo Switch 2 launch? That would be because some eagle-eyed fans have noted that Nintendo appears to be filing some new patents, and it has led many to wonder if Ring Fit Adventure is about to get a sequel on the new Nintendo platform.
If this is true, and if it comes in, say, the next two years or so, this could be a nice title that sells just as well as the OG Switch version, minus the need for having a global pandemic to spur things on. First and foremost, the Switch 2 Joy-Cons are far more advanced than the original ones, which means that Nintendo can go even deeper into the workout system and help develop players even further. Second, with the Switch 2’s processing power and graphics, the fantasy world that you’ll be exercising through can be far more advanced and offer numerous new challenges to overcome.
Plus, since the original game sold 15 million units, that’s a lot of people to appeal to and try to bring back. There are plenty of people who are obsessed with fitness, and being able to do this kind of thing in their own home is always a boon.
Thus, it wouldn’t be the oddest thing in the world to see a sequel announced soon, especially if the rumored Nintendo Direct arrives soon to help promote the upcoming titles of 2025 and 2026.
If the game were to come out and succeed again, it’s also possible that Nintendo could develop DLC or even a third entry during the Switch 2’s lifetime, as they would know at that point that this game can “carry a franchise.” Food for thought.
