Nintendo Switch 2 Requires Day One Update Before You Can Use MicroSD Express Card

May 27, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Prepare to spend some time updating your console at launch.

Nintendo fans have a big year. We started out this year with the official reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2. Then, it was just last month that we got the official Nintendo Direct presentation. That presentation provided fans with a better overview of the console and its software. However, we’re also finding out today that there will be a day-one update required to get full use of the Switch 2 console.

It’s not surprising that an update is already scheduled to be released for the console before its launch. Nintendo is committed to creating the best product possible for consumers, and that means releasing updates that address issues identified since manufacturing began. However, we’re learning today that one aspect that is being adjusted for the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch deals with the MicroSD Express Card.

Thanks to Nintendo Soup, we’re finding out that a photo of one of the Nintendo Switch 2 boxes was snapped and shared online. What makes it notable is that even before the console shipped, a notification on the packaging indicated that a system update was required to use a microSD Express memory card.

So, it looks like Nintendo didn’t intend for this feature of the console to be readily useable until it officially launched into the marketplace. If you don’t recall, unlike the standard Nintendo Switch, the successor doesn’t use normal microSD cards. Instead, Nintendo opted for microSD Express cards. These cards are far faster, so don’t expect to pop out your old microSD card from your current Nintendo Switch to use with this one.

Recent news regarding the Switch 2 has focused on retailers finally receiving stock for the new console. June 5, 2025, is approaching quickly, so it’s reassuring to know that stock is already being moved to different retailer locations. Likewise, rumors suggest that we might be getting ready for a new Nintendo Direct this coming month despite the console just launching into the marketplace. However, just what games might be highlighted during this rumored presentation is anyone’s guess right now.
