Hideo Kojima Talks Real-Time Mechanics That Could Happen In A Future Game

May 14, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

You’ll need to take time off work to play this one.

Hideo Kojima is a brilliant game designer with an astonishing record and a strong fan base. After his departure from Konami, fans proved willing to follow him to his own studio, Kojima Productions. Recently, the developer took time to release another episode of his podcast and discuss some ideas that could happen in a future game.

Right now, Hideo Kojima’s focus is ensuring a smooth launch of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. However, thanks to IGN, which translated the podcast, Hideo mentioned some ideas he had for gameplay mechanics that revolved around real-time. This wouldn’t be the first try at doing something like this.

For instance, some of these real-time mechanics were featured in his Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater game. Hideo mentioned that there were mechanics such as having fresh food rot over a few days, making it no longer viable to consume. Likewise, there was an infamous boss battle in which, if players waited a week to progress the game file, the enemy would actually die of old age.

However, Hideo Kojima gave some examples of his ideas that could end up in a future game. One of the least interesting ideas Hideo feels wouldn’t be popular is having a game where your character ages over time. So, as you start young, your character will have better stamina and power. But once you slow down to an older man, you would have better knowledge despite having poor eyesight and stamina. Ultimately, this would force players’ hands into thinking of a means to defeat enemies.

Meanwhile, the developer has another idea that might happen in a future game. In this idea, the character you play as could forget things. If days go by without playing, your character could forget mission details and mechanics. That would put players against the clock, ensuring they kept up with the game. Hideo even noted that players could take a week off work or school just to play it.

Now we will have to wait and see if any of these mechanics end up in a future game. As mentioned, Kojima Productions’ latest title is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which will be released on June 26, 2025. You’ll find it available on the PlayStation 5 when the game does launch.
