Well…that happened. Look, last year, when the first trailer for the Minecraft Movie dropped, most of us were going, “What in the world was that?” Then, things went really quiet with the movie, and then it dropped another trailer that almost no one talked about. Marketing for the overall product was mostly quiet, but then before we knew it, the movie was about to hit theaters. Due to it being the best-selling video game of all time, many figured it would do “well enough” at the box office, especially given how sluggish things have been in theaters so far this year. However, no one saw what actually happened this past weekend.
As revealed by Variety and a bunch of other sources, the Minecraft Movie not only was the No.1 movie at the box office, but it earned $157 million domestically! That’s insane. Not just that, if you recall, in 2023, Mario did an equally impressive number during its box office opening, but this movie did better by a few million dollars! And yes, that means that Jack Black has now been one of the stars of the two biggest video game adaptation movie weekends ever. Go figure.
But wait, there’s more! The film has also done incredibly internationally, with Variety reporting that it earned $144 million. That means that the film has gotten over $300 million in just one weekend, and that means it’s basically earned DOUBLE its production budget in just three days. That’s very impressive, and it blows away all the other “hits” from 2025 so far, including a certain Marvel movie that all but tanked after its first weekend at the box office.
That brings us to the next big question, “Will the movie follow Mario’s route and get a billion dollars?” We won’t say “yes” just yet for a big reason: consistency at the box office. On the one hand, this movie won’t have the biggest competition for the next few weeks, so that’ll go in its favor. The question is whether it’ll keep being a draw both domestically and internationally for a while. Mario’s film was able to do that, and that’s why it became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time! Can this movie do it? Sure, why not?
Look, no one saw this coming, especially after the divisive reaction from critics. However, this proves that gamers’ love for their favorite gaming IPs outweighs what the critics think. So now, we can just sit back and watch how high this number climbs.
