The Nintendo Switch Direct that happened today might not have been the biggest thing around, for obvious reasons, but there were a few things that were worthy of mentioning, and arguably the biggest one was Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. The game was confirmed to be coming out last year, and now, we’re just waiting for the release date. We still don’t have it yet, but we did get an all-new look at the game, including where Samus Aran is this time around and the new abilities that she’ll have for her latest adventure. She’ll need every advantage she can get to take on this new world.
Somehow, Samus has been transported to a world known as Viewros, which is a large jungle-like planet, one that’s quite unlike any she has been to before. There, she must not only find a way back home but unlock the mysteries of this place. Things only get compounded when she meets some of the natural inhabitants of this planet, some of whom want to kill her, while others view her as the “Chosen One” that they have been waiting for. Thankfully, Retro Studios is embracing what they’ve done in the past with the original trilogy they made, so the gameplay and looks will feel very familiar to long-time fans while being easy to pick up for new gamers.
The big twist in the gameplay this time is that Samus Aran unlocks “Psychic Abilities,” and we do mean that in the literal sense. She’ll get the ability to use her mind in various ways, both in and out of battle. For example, she’ll be able to use psychic powers to open doors, grab objects, and solve key puzzles. Then, in battle, she’ll have the ability to guide her shots so that she can attack multiple enemies with a single blast.
There are still many questions that we have about Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, including the events that led to Samus being stranded on this planet. Where is Sylux? Where are the Space Pirates? How will Samus get back to her own world? What is the name of the brand-new suit that she gets at the end of the trailer? Oh, and most importantly of all: WHEN IS THE GAME COMING OUT? Yes, even after this rather impressive trailer, we still only know that the game will arrive in 2025. That could imply it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, but that’s unconfirmed.
