As we showed off yesterday, the upcoming film set in NetherRealm’s beloved fighting franchise will feature not only the actual Mortal Kombat tournament this time around but also bring in more characters from the franchise to truly flesh out just how grand this universe is. Kitana, Shao Khan, Johnny Cage, Jade, and more have already been confirmed for the film, and more are still to come. Naturally, NetherRealm Studios will want to tie the movie into its most recent game, Mortal Kombat 1, in its own way, and that’s exactly what it’s going to do via some skins that are Koming to the title.
As you can see below, the Mortal Kombat 1 skins will feature the new looks of Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Shao Khan, and Kitana. You have to admit, they look a bit different from their gaming counterparts at times, especially with Shao Khan’s mask and Scorpion’s overall attire. Johnny and Kitana only look slightly different, but that’s fine. While no release date has been announced for the skins, we know that the movie is coming out in October, so that’s likely when the drop happens.
As for the movie, the sequel to the 2021 reboot will feature the fight for Earthrealm, and that’s why characters like Johnny Cage are being brought into the mix. In the interview within our article yesterday, Ed Boon noted that Johnny Cage would be one of the true focuses of the film, praising Karl Urban for what he was able to bring to the mix while also still being true to the lore of Johnny Cage himself. Boon also teased that there would be plenty of “drama and twists” during the tournament and that it would be portrayed as a true tournament with “high stakes.”
Given that the fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance, we’re pretty sure the stakes are high.
The previous film had a bit of a mixed reception among fans. On the one hand, it embraced the wackier and brutal natures of the universe via its visuals, fights, and Fatalities. Some of the deaths were truly brutal, and they were fun to watch.
However, the plot, dialogue, and portrayal of some of the Kombatants rubbed some fans the wrong way. Plus, obviously, the tournament wasn’t the film’s focus, which many felt hindered it from being a true reboot. Thankfully for the team, they did well enough to get the sequel approved ahead of time, so we’ll have to wait and see if they can do better this time.
