Capcom has been on a serious roll in recent years. By that, we mean that they’ve had multiple successful launches with very few if any, duds to speak of. Quality has been a high priority for them, and it shows. Plus, as we are now nearly a full month into 2025, the company still has one of the most-anticipated games of the year that gamers can’t wait to get their hands on. Since the company has been around for decades and has plenty of franchises under its umbrella, which is on top sales-wise? Resident Evil is the answer to that question.
As you’ll see in the list below, Resident Evil has a handy lead over all of its competitors, which might surprise some of you when you think of certain “highs and lows” the franchise has had over its lifetime. After all, it was once the best horror franchise in the business, but then it got very convoluted and dull, and gamers weren’t as amused. However, the real “shot in the arm” for the franchise came from a two-pronged attack that Capcom did.
Not only did it go back to its roots with its 7th entry, which is the best-selling entry in the franchise, but it also started to remake past games so that people could experience them with modern graphics and key quality-of-life changes that made the games even better to play. As such, the remakes of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th titles all received critical acclaim, “Game of the Year” nominations at times, and all sold incredibly well.
When added to the success of the 7th and 8th titles, with the 7th game selling over 14 million units and the 8th selling over 10 million, you can see why the franchise is on top.
With that success, Capcom is definitely aiming to continue its streak and keep the sales rolling. There are rumors of a 9th mainline entry coming eventually, but it’s not been confirmed as of yet.
As for the other franchises on the list, there are definitely some other surprises to be had. For example, Monster Hunter got a huge boost in sales because of the last two franchise entries, which broke through the “Western barrier” to get those millions of gamers intrigued finally, and the sales speak for themselves. When the next entry arrives, that lifetime number will definitely go up.
With Street Fighter, while its popularity is undeniable, its sales per game were never as high as you’d think it would be.
