To be blunt, there have been plenty of rumors and reports about various things happening throughout the gaming space. It’s a bit of an overload, as you almost never know what’s true or not until someone from the top levels of a company announces it or confirms that the rumors are true. You could honestly say that January has been full of such things, making you wonder what the rest of 2025 will be like. The latest piece from the rumor mill comes from Square Enix, where two of the men behind the Final Fantasy VII “Remake Saga” have seemed to indicate that the series will arrive on other platforms soon.
You can see the words of the director and producer below, and it seems pretty clear what they’re “saying,” even though they’re not actually “saying” anything definitive just yet:
It’s not hard to read between the lines here. The Final Fantasy VII “Remake Saga” has only been on three systems since its launch in 2020. They’ve been on Sony’s PlayStation via the PS4 and PS5, and they’ve been on PC. One could easily argue that this has been the reason that sales weren’t as high as they arguably should’ve been, but we’ll get to that later.
One of the ironies of this statement is that there have been rumors recently that the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Xbox Series X/S would get these games. The first entries would drop this year, while the sequel would follow in 2026. Again, this is unconfirmed for the moment, but based on what the two head guys of the project have said, things seem to be heading in that direction.
So, why are they heading in that direction? Simply put, the sales of certain Square Enix titles, or lack thereof, have seriously hurt the company. You may recall that the publisher had to go through a serious “restructuring” plan that resulted in many layoffs, games shutting down on the live-service level, and the promise being made that the company’s games would take a more multiplatform approach in the future, which is potentially being shown here.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 coming soon, now is a great time for Square Enix to bring some of its games to the mobile console so that it can get some extra sales. Plus, with the third entry in the “Remake Saga” being made right now, the team will want as many people buying it on day one as possible.
