Resident Evil is an iconic Capcom franchise that features multiple games, films, and series. It’s been a good little while since the movie series that offered a new spin to the storyline ended. Now, it looks like there is a new move to bring out a reboot, with multiple studios making bids on the project.
After six Resident Evil movies featuring the actress Milla Jovovich, we saw the conclusion to this storyline back in 2017. Of course, there was another reboot attempt back in 2021 with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But now, thanks to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, a new effort to bring this IP back to the big screen could be heading into production soon.
The report noted that Zach Cregger, the filmmaker who previously brought out Barbarian, is behind the movie. Beyond that, it’s noted that Shay Hatten from John Wick: Chapter 4 fame is co-writing this reboot. We also know that PlayStation Studios is producing this film alongside Constantin Film, which has the screen rights for Resident Evil films.
Of course, since PlayStation Studios is involved, we might find something released that is closer to the source material. Regardless, the current phase seems to be picking a movie studio to bring this film out. It also seems to be rather popular, as multiple studios are said to be in the bidding war.
While The Hollywood Reporter didn’t list every studio making bids, it noted that Warner Bros. and Netflix were among them. So, as it stands right now, we might be a good ways off before we get any marketing materials to highlight what the narrative will entail and who will be attached to the project once filming begins. Meanwhile, PlayStation Studios recently saw the first trailer for their next horror film to hit theaters release. You can check out the Until Dawn movie trailer right here.
